Get to know Orthopedic Surgeon Dr. Stelios A. Koutsoumbelis, who serves patients throughout the State of New York.

Dr. Koutsoumbelis is an experienced orthopedic spinal surgeon who specializes in the management of all spinal and scoliosis disorders. He is in practice with The Central Orthopedic Group, seeing patients at multiple locations including Rockville Centre and Massapequa, New York.

All of the patients that he treats first undergo a comprehensive evaluation, with most being managed with non-operative interventions such as physical therapy or pain management. For the small percentage of patients that do require surgery, he performs a full spectrum of surgical procedures that range from minimally invasive to complex spinal reconstruction.

Professionally, Dr. Koutsoumbelis serves as the acting Chief of the Department of Orthopedic Surgery at Mount Sinai – South Nassau Communities Hospital in Oceanside, New York. He also serves as the Orthopedic Spinal Surgeon for the Chiari Neurosurgical Institute of Long Island, where he is frequently called upon to perform spinal procedures for patients with both EDS and Chiari, some of whom travel from other countries seeking treatment.

In New York, the doctor’s hospital affiliations include: North Shore University Hospital, St. Francis Hospital, Winthrop Hospital, Mercy Medical Center, Plainview Hospital, Syosset Hospital, and St. Joseph Hospital. 

Upon obtaining his undergraduate degree from Tulane University, Dr. Koutsoumbelis went on to earn his medical degree from Northeast Ohio Medical University. He then completed his internship at Akron City Hospital and his residency in orthopedic surgery at North Shore University Hospital. Thereafter, he went on to complete his fellowship within the Department of Spine Surgery at Hospital for Special Surgery in New York City, which focused on spinal deformity, scoliosis, and degenerative spinal conditions.

In addition, Dr. Koutsoumbelis went on to receive advanced spinal oncology training at the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York City, which has afforded the ability for him to treat spinal tumors as well. He then returned to Long Island, where he grew up, to go into private practice.

Specializing in neck and spine surgery, he is a Diplomate of the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery, an organization with the goal of establishing educational and professional standards for orthopedic residents and surgeons as well as evaluating the qualifications and competence of orthopedic surgeons.

In good standing with a number of professional organizations, Dr. Koutsoumbelis is an active member of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, the North American Spine Society, the Scoliosis Research Society, and the International Society for the Advancement of Spinal Surgery.

Additionally, he collaborates with the following research institutions: Hospital for Special Surgery, Feinstein Institute for Medical Research, Weill Cornell Medical Center, and Leon Root Motion Analysis Laboratory.

Orthopedic surgery is the branch of surgery concerned with conditions involving the musculoskeletal system.
