Get to know Cardiothoracic Surgeon Dr. Stephen L. Martin, who serves patients in Chattanooga, Tennessee.

Dr. Martin is an experienced, fellowship-trained cardiothoracic surgeon who specializes in open and minimally invasive approaches to cardiothoracic surgery to tailor each procedure to the specific needs of the patient. He tends to patients at Centennial Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery at Parkridge in Chattanooga, Tennessee. 

A part of Parkridge Health, Centennial Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery at Parkridge is a surgical specialty group focusing on the surgical treatment of conditions affecting the heart and lungs. There, Dr. Martin focuses on treating persistent atrial fibrillation, blocked coronary arteries, thoracic aortic aneurysm, and valve disorders. He has interest and experience in performing the Convergent procedure and thoracoscopic ligation of the left atrial appendage, as well as open carotid endarterectomy cases. 

Having previously practiced with Parkridge Cardiothoracic Surgery, he is affiliated with CHI Memorial Hospital and Erlanger Medical Center.

A 1985 graduate of the University of Tennessee College of Medicine, Dr. Martin went on to further his education. He performed his residency in general surgery and his fellowship in thoracic surgery at the University of Tennessee Medical Center, Knoxville.

Recognized as a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons (FACS), he is  board-certified in thoracic and cardiac surgery by the American Board of Thoracic Surgery (ABTS). The ABTS is an American surgical organization devoted to surgery of the chest.

Cardiothoracic surgery is the field of medicine involved in the surgical treatment of organs inside the thorax. Cardiothoracic surgeons are medical doctors who specialize in surgical procedures inside the thorax, which may involve the heart, lungs, esophagus, and other organs in the chest. Alongside performing surgery, they also diagnose and treat diseases of these organs. 

Among Dr. Martin’s most notable achievements include: On-Time Doctor Award (2015) and Compassionate Doctor Recognition (2015).
