Get to know Surgical Oncologist Dr. Reynold E. Lopez, who serves patients in San Juan, Puerto Rico.
Recognized as a skilled surgical oncologist, Dr. Lopez offers surgical treatment for patients suffering from a variety of cancers. He is currently Associate Chairman of the Comprehensive Cancer Center of Puerto Rico, where he is actively involved in research activities & Chair of the Cancer Committee and Tumor Board President at Hospital Pavía – Santurce.
At the same time, he serves as Director of the Division of Surgical Oncology at the University of Puerto Rico School of Medicine, Medical Sciences Campus, where he is also a full time Professor.
With a broad educational background, Dr. Lopez graduated with his Bachelor of Science degree from Marquette University in New York in 1967. He then went on to earn his medical degree from the University of Puerto Rico School of Medicine in 1971.
While performing his residency in general surgery at the Puerto Rico University Hospital, he became a Cancer Fellow of the American College of Surgeons during 1973-1974 and then participated as Clinical Cancer Fellow of the US Department of Health Education and Welfare at the Hospital during 1975-1976. Upon completion of his residency, he spent a year as Cancer Fellow at the Roswell Park Memorial Institute in Buffalo, New York. He then spent two more years serving a fellowship in surgical oncology at Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center (Head and Neck Cancer Service / Solid Tumors Division), completing his training in 1979.
Licensed to practice medicine in Puerto Rico, the doctor is board-certified in general surgery by American Board of Surgery (ABS). The ABS is an independent, non-profit organization located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, founded for the purpose of certifying surgeons who have met a defined standard of education, training, and knowledge.
Holding fellowship status, Dr. Lopez is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons (FACS), a Fellow of the Society of Surgical Oncology (FSSO), and a Fellow of the American Society of Clinical Oncology (FASCO).
Surgical oncology is the branch of surgery applied to oncology. It focuses on the surgical management of tumors, especially cancerous tumors. A surgical oncologist removes the tumor and nearby tissue during surgery. He or she also performs certain types of biopsies to help diagnose cancer.
In honor of his expertise, Dr. Lopez has received several distinctions, among them including Who’s Who in America (1991) and AMA Physician Recognition Award (1991).
