Get to know Neurosurgeon Dr. Peter M. Carney, who serves patients in Elkhart, Indiana.

Dr. Carney is a board-certified neurosurgeon who is currently serving patients at his private practice in Elkhart, Indiana. He uses his skill, knowledge, and expertise to help patients in chronic pain live a better life. Dr. Carney specializes in treating painful peripheral neuropathy by creating the New 3 Rs: Regenerate Reduce, and Restore(™). He revolutionizes the treatment of pain by healing damaged nerves, rather than just masking the symptoms. 

Dr. Carney is on the staff of the Community Hospital of Bremen, and a member of the Beacon Health System. He is also the only physician in Michiana to utilize a treatment called Combined Electrochemical Therapy (CET). He has published extensively about CET and has presented his results to physicians from all over the world.

Dr. Carney earned his medical degree from the Case Western Reserve School of Medicine in Cleveland, Ohio in 1962. He spent six years as an intern in surgery and resident in neurosurgery at the Yale-New Haven Hospital.

Since his time as a resident at Yale, Dr. Carney has been active in developing innovative methods to improve the practice of medicine. He was part of the first major meeting that promoted the use of the operating microscope in neurosurgery. His presentation on the use of large decompressive craniotomies for head trauma helped to change the existing standards of care for severe head injuries.

Dr. Carney is a Fellow of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons (FAANS). He is also a member of the American Medical Association (AMA), the Indiana State Medical Association (ISMA), the Congress of Neurological Surgeons (CNS), the American Academy of Pain Medicine (AAPM), the Neuropathic Special Interest Group (NEUPSIG), the International Association for the Study of Pain (IASP), the Midwest Pain Society (MPS), the World Institute of Pain (WIP), and the Yale Surgical Society (YSS).

Dr. Carney is board-certified in neurological surgery by the American Board of Neurological Surgery (ABNS). The broad aim of the ABNS is to encourage the study, improve the practice, elevate the standards, and advance the science of neurological surgery, thereby serving the cause of public health.

In the 21st century, Dr. Carney has promoted the use of non-opioid methods to treat pain (both by healing damaged nerves and by teaching patients how to use their own brain power to overcome pain). He uses treatments and methods that heal nerves, reduce pain and medication use, as well as improve the ability to function without side effects. These treatments help each unique patient gain control over their pain in order to live a more complete and satisfying life without the burden of constant pain or dependence on medication.

Neurosurgery, or neurological surgery, is the medical specialty concerned with the prevention, diagnosis, surgical treatment, and rehabilitation of disorders which affect any portion of the nervous system including the brain, spinal cord, peripheral nerves, and extra-cranial cerebrovascular system. Neurosurgeons are doctors who diagnose and treat problems with the nervous system, often by performing surgery on the brain or spine. They treat strokes, tumors, certain types of birth defects, infections, and head or spinal cord injuries.
