Get to know Internist Dr. William T. Tanner, who serves patients in Hollywood, Maryland.

Recognized as a skilled internist, Dr. Tanner works within the Division of Internal Medicine at MedStar Shah Medical Group in Hollywood, Maryland.

Medstar Shah Medical Group is a multi-specialty practice offering some of the most comprehensive outpatient medical services available throughout Southern Maryland. Shah Associates was established in 1974 as a three-physician practice and since then, the group has grown to include 100+ physicians and specialists at 15 locations throughout 5 counties in Maryland, making its services highly accessible to patients. As a member of the American Medical Group Association, Medstar Shah Medical Group values physician leadership, teamwork across specialties, and continuous improvement of patient care.

Upon embarking on his medical journey, Dr. Tanner graduated with his medical degree from Universidad Central del Este San Pedro del Macoris in the Domenican Republic in 1979. He then went on to perform his internship in psychiatry at Manhattan Psychiatric Center in 1981, followed by his residency in internal medicine at Tripler Army Medical Center in 1986. 

Specializing in the medical treatment of adults, he is board-certified in internal medicine by the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM). The ABIM is a physician-led, non-profit, independent evaluation organization driven by doctors who want to achieve higher standards for better care in a rapidly changing world.

Professionally, Dr. Tanner serves as the Medical Director of Clinton Nursing & Rehabilitation Center, and as the Chief Advisor of Medicine at MedStar Southern Maryland Hospital Center.

In order to stay up to date in his field, he remains an active member of the American Medical Association, Prince George’s County Medical Society, the American Society of Internal Medicine, the American College of Physicians, the American Medical Directors Association, and the Maryland State Medical Society. 

Internal medicine is the medical specialty dealing with the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of adult diseases. Physicians specializing in internal medicine are called internists. They manage and prevent common and complex diseases by providing comprehensive care and promoting overall well-being.

In his spare time, Dr. Tanner enjoys taking pictures and gardening. He speaks both English and Spanish.
