Get to know Vascular Surgeon Dr. Todd H. Wilkens, who serves patients throughout the State of Tennessee.

A skilled vascular surgeon, Dr. Wilkens is affiliated with The Surgical Clinic, seeing patients at their Rutherford Clinic and Summit Clinic. He says that when he sees a patient, he sees them as a member of his own family. He believes that patients should feel like they are getting the attention they need and the answers they want. He also believes that patients deserve more care than just telling the what or how of their surgical treatment.

Focusing on treating a broad spectrum of vascular surgery, he provides minimally invasive treatments for varicose veins and deep vein thrombosis or DVT. He also provides treatment for carotid artery disease and peripheral vascular disease. In addition to vascular disease and vascular health, he provides services for patients who have problems with dialysis. Aortic disease and aneurysms are also part of his treatment expertise.

The conditions Dr. Wilkens treats are often recurring or long-term. Because of this, he strives to build relationships with his patients in order to make their health care more enjoyable. Their comfort is why he explains the procedures carefully every time. He wants patients to understand the exact nature of the procedure so they can be at ease. He hopes that the people he treats know they are getting the right procedure. He believes in the value of his patient’s time, and ensures they receive the best possible treatment.

A native of East Tennessee, he has trained as a vascular surgeon in several different states. He went to college in Tennessee and then earned his medical degree at the Loma Linda University School of Medicine. During his Army service, he completed his residency in general surgery at the Brooke Army Medical Center in Texas. He later returned to Loma Linda University, where he completed his fellowship in vascular surgery for more medical training.

Recognized as a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons (FACS), the doctor is board-certified in vascular surgery and general surgery by the American Board of Surgery (ABS). The ABS is an independent, non-profit organization located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, founded for the purpose of certifying surgeons who have met a defined standard of education, training, and knowledge.

Once he completed his education in California, Dr. Wilkens moved back home. He then served as a general and vascular surgeon for 15 years in East Tennessee before joining The Surgical Clinic. He can also be found on staff at Stonecrest Medical Center, and Summit Medical Center.

Vascular surgery is a surgical subspecialty in which diseases of the vascular system, including the arteries, veins, and lymphatic circulation, are managed by medical therapy, minimally invasive catheter procedures, and surgical reconstruction. A vascular surgeon diagnoses, treats, and manages conditions in the arteries and veins, also called the blood vessels. These specialists treat a range of health problems, from spider and varicose veins to life-threatening aneurysms, and can help patients manage chronic conditions throughout their lives.

When he is not meeting with patients, Dr. Wilkens enjoys spending time with his wife and three children. Together, their family enjoys going outdoors and experiencing all the opportunities Nashville has to offer.
