Alongside his clinical role, he serves as an Assistant Professor of Medicine within the Division of Endocrinology, Diabetes and Bone Disease at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. The Division of Endocrinology, Diabetes and Bone Disease is providing care for patients with endocrine diseases, including, but not exclusive to diabetes, throughout the city by unifying protocols, programs, and treatments in the newly created Mount Sinai Health System to serve the community with endocrine disorders through outreach, education, and innovative community-based programs.

Back in 1975, Dr. Tolbert earned his medical degree from the New York University School of Medicine. He then went on to complete his internship in internal medicine and his residency in internal medicine at Harlem Hospital Center.

Following his education, the doctor became board-certified in internal medicine by the American Board of Internal Medicine, a physician-led, non-profit, independent evaluation organization driven by doctors who want to achieve higher standards for better care in a rapidly changing world.

In addition to being a member of the East Harlem Diabetes Center of Excellence and a consultant to the United Nations, Dr. Tolbert has worked closely with the American Diabetes Association (ADA) in a number of capacities, including past president of the ADA’s New York City Leadership Council, a current member of the ADA’s National Leadership Council, as well as a national and local speaker. He was honored for his contribution at the ADA’s 2007 gala. 

Endocrinology is a branch of biology and medicine dealing with the endocrine system, its diseases, and its specific secretions known as hormones. Endocrinologists have the training to diagnose and treat hormone imbalances and problems by helping to restore the normal balance of hormones in the body.
