With a broad educational background, he obtained his medical degree from the George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences in 1997. He then went on to serve his residency in obstetrics and gynecology at LAC+USC Medical Center in 2001.

From September 2001 until March of 2007, Dr. McCausland served as an attending physician at Sutter Health, acting with full privileges as a board-certified attending obstetrician-gynecologist. He served as Department Vice Chair in 2006, and taught as clinical faculty for the Sutter Health Family Medicine Residency.

A Life Fellow of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, he is the recipient of the Teacher of the Year Award though the Sutter Health Family Medicine Residency (2005-2006) and the Frank Lynch Memorial Essay Award through the Pacific Coast Obstetrical and Gynecological Society (2001).
