Get to know Colorectal Surgeon Dr. Ali Mahmood, who serves patients in Sugar Land, Texas.

A dedicated and compassionate colorectal surgeon, Dr. Mahmood serves as the Chairman for the Department of Surgery at Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital. His primary interest in the field of colorectal surgery is colon and rectal cancer, along with benign diseases such as Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis, and diverticular disease. He performs laparoscopic surgery for these diseases and is formally trained in TEM (Transanal Endoscopic Microsurgery) procedures. 

Well respected by his peers in the community and at the medical center, he was the first colon and rectal surgeon to perform the rhomboid flap for pilonidal disease in Fort Bend County. He also specializes in the treatment of common anorectal disorders, offers treatment of pelvic floor disorders such as rectal prolapse and fecal incontinence, and has been trained in the da Vinci robotic surgical system.

“My goal is to deliver excellent medical care, with compassion and warmth, to each patient. My practice provides the same level of expertise as the Texas Medical Center, conveniently close to home in Fort Bend County” expressed the doctor.

Before embarking on his professional journey, Dr. Mahmood graduated with his medical degree from Baylor University, and matriculated at St. Joseph Mercy Oakland and Wayne State University for his general surgery training. Upon completion of his residency, he pursued a fellowship in colon and rectal surgery at the Ferguson Clinic, Michigan State University.

An expert in his field, he is board-certified in both colon and rectal surgery and general surgery by the American Board of Colorectal Surgery (ABCRS) and the American Board of Surgery (ABS). The ABCRS and ABS are both an independent, non-profit organization founded for the purpose of certifying surgeons who have met a defined standard of education, training, and knowledge.

Maintaining fellowship status, Dr. Mahmood is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons (FACS), and a Fellow of the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons (FASCRS).

In order to remain up to date in his field, he is an active member of the Society for American Gastrointestinal & Endoscopic Surgeons, the Fort Bend Medical Society, the Texas Medical Association, the Society of Laparoendoscopic Surgeons, the Detroit Surgical Association, the Detroit Academy of Surgery, the American College of Hyperbaric Medicine, and the American Chemical Society.

As for his academic appointments, Dr. Mahmood is appointed faculty and an Assistant Professor in the Michael E. DeBakey Department of Surgery at Baylor College of Medicine, and a Clinical Instructor at the Michigan State University School of Medicine. He has authored numerous papers published in medical journals, and serves as a reviewer for the Radiology Case Reports journal and served as a reviewer for Contemporary Surgery.

Colorectal surgery is a field in medicine dealing with disorders of the rectum, anus, and colon. It covers caring for patients with cancers of the colon, rectum and anus along with other benign disorders like inflammatory bowel disease (Ulcerative Colitis and Crohn’s Disease), diverticulitis and a myriad of anorectal pathologies like hemorrhoids, fistulas, abscesses and fissures.

Among his various accolades, Dr. Mahmood was the recipient of the Alexander J. Walt Award in 2008, one of two top awards given at the Michigan Chapter of the American College of Surgeons, and was selected as the Physician of the Year in 2013 at Methodist Sugar Land Hospital.
