Get to know Internist Dr. Andrew J. Norton, who served patients in Pennsylvania.

Whip-smart and accomplished in his field, Dr. Norton was a highly regarded internist and a proactive thinker, loved and admired by all who knew him. A leader at Main Line Health, he passed away on Sunday, September 6th of 2020, of complications from a rare autoimmune disease at Lankenau Medical Center.

Born in Buffalo, New York to James F. Norton and Mary E. Falk, Dr. Norton grew up in nearby East Aurora. He graduated from Canisius High School and earned a bachelor’s degree from St. Louis University. After following in his father’s footsteps and earning his medical degree from Jefferson Medical College, he went to the Medical College of Wisconsin in Milwaukee, where he completed a residency in internal medicine and spent 30 years as a professor of clinical medicine. He also practiced internal medicine for 27 years.

From 1997 to 2011, he was senior vice president and chief medical officer for Froedtert Hospital, affiliated with the Medical College of Wisconsin. In addition to being a teacher, he never stopped reading and going to conferences, and delighted in discussing medical journal articles with others.

In 2012, he became senior vice president and chief medical officer for Main Line Health and remained in that role until late July, when he stopped working due to health issues.

From the moment he arrived at Lankenau Medical Center, Dr. Norton insisted that his colleagues and patients call him “Andy.” He relished the chance to teach the hospital’s medical students and residents, making it clear that education was one of his passions and that he wished to share his knowledge and enthusiasm for the practice of medicine with young learners.

One of his greatest recent professional achievements was his leadership of Main Line Health system’s response to COVID-19. He drove a coordinated strategy and became the system’s visible face of the efforts, working limitless hours to present a calm and thoughtful response to the pandemic.

A Fellow of the American College of Physicians (FACP), Dr. Norton was board-certified in internal medicine by the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM). The ABIM is a physician-led, non-profit, independent evaluation organization driven by doctors who want to achieve higher standards for better care in a rapidly changing world.

Internal medicine is the medical specialty dealing with the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of adult diseases. Physicians specializing in internal medicine are called internists. They manage and prevent common and complex diseases by providing comprehensive care and promoting overall well-being.

A man of integrity, Dr. Norton was a loving, giving, and caring person. He had a way of making everyone feel included and valued. He is survived by his wife, Deyonne Epperson, whom he adored; daughters Aryn and Mackenzie; sons Caleb and Samuel; stepdaughter Stephanie Rakic; three grandsons; and many other family members, including numerous nieces and nephews.

A generation of internal medicine physicians have been influenced by Dr. Norton and will continue his legacy of passion for medicine, education, and care for his fellow human beings. His legacy will live on through his students and mentees.
