  • How do you treat pus in the gums?

SEE YOUR DENTIST OR A DENTIST RIGHT AWAY!!! Pus in the gums can be due to a buildup of plaque and bacteria due to the need for a professional cleaning (dental prophylaxis or "prophy") or it can be a sign of a more serious issue, such as an abscess caused by a dental infection. Some can be painless, but then again, some can blow up into something more devastating with respect to your physical appearance, your self confidence, and more importantly... your health! Lokesh C. • Teeth still moving post having worn retainer for a year (not consistently)

1 to 3 of the reasons below may be at play here. 1) The roots have not been moved into the right positions, which will increase the likelihood of relapse. 2) the bite may not have been fully adjusted, premature contacts of the teeth may cause the teeth to move. 3) There may be a thickened tissue attachment that is causing the teeth to move. Unless this attachment is made optimal, the teeth will continue to relapse. See a board certified orthodontist for a consult or 2nd opinion. READ MORE

  • Are tooth implants safe?

Last I checked, about 1% of the population is allergic to the titanium used in dental implants. Titanium implants are stronger than zirconia implants. This is currently the most reliable replacement of missing teeth. For single tooth replacements, there is about a 98% success rate for dental implant therapy. Make sure the surgeon or dentist placing them has had sufficient experience placing implants. Furthermore, the use of a CT scan (3D xray) is recommended prior to the placement of the implant. • What happens if I don't go for my root canal?

1st off, are you in pain or were you in pain with respect to this tooth? If so, then you give the bacteria a chance to ramp things up and make your life miserable. If not, but you have a deep restoration, then there is also a chance the nerve can become inflamed and also make things miserable. Bottom line, you need to call the dentist that referred you for the root canal to get your final answer. There is not enough room here to explain the consequences and I do not know the full history of the tooth in question. Better to be out of pain than to be in pain. If the root canal is done right and you don't wait for an infection to develop, then you should be in pain. Hope this helps. READ MORE

  • Will my increased sugar levels cause a problem to treat my gum disease?

YES. Decreased ability to heal. Talk to your endocrinologist or internist and a dietician to get some type of plan to reduce your blood sugar. Get frequent cleanings to control the plaque around your teeth and gums (3-4 times per year). READ MORE

  • How is a tooth extraction determined?

Unfortunately, you procrastinating is the the very reason why you may need an extraction. The pain most likely started due to decay in your teeth. If left untreated, the decay spreads. If the decay gets too close to the bone, then you have to decide if the tooth is worth saving. If you have to remove bone to save it, you may want to consider an implant. Ideally, you should have gone to the dentist when you first felt a little tingle in your tooth and then go in for regular check-ups every 4-6 months. READ MORE
