What is the best medication for panic attacks?
It would be best to see a psychiatrist if you are considering medication since psychologists in California are not yet permitted to prescribe psychotropic medication. There are anti-anxiety medications to use for quick, short-term relief and ones such as anti-depressants (SSRIs) that provide longer-term relief for anxiety. Many people mistake an anxiety attack (i.e., having an overwhelming experience of anxiety) for a panic attack. In the later, one experiences intense symptoms of racing heart, difficulty breathing, and often feel as if they are having a heart attack or are going to die. Psychotherapy can be a helpful treatment or adjunct to medication. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, as well as positive self-talk and relaxation exercises, such as deep breathing, progressive muscle relaxation, and positive visualization are particularly helpful. One might also consider exploring deeper sources that might be contributing to anxiety. READ MORE
