  • Why are my son's gums bleeding after a dental cleaning?

If your son has tartar buildup (particularly the lower front teeth) over 6 months or so, that material needs to be scaled (or scraped) off and it is often below the gum line. This will cause bleeding after a cleaning. You can google “dental tartar” and get more information on this substance. It is NOT plaque. That is different. READ MORE

  • How do I get relief from a toothache?

There really is no such thing as instant relief from a toothache. You need to find out the source of the toothache. You need to see a dentist. There are several things that can cause a toothache. Treatment is rendered based on the pain source. The only thing I can suggest on a short term basis is Tylenol or Motrin. READ MORE

  • Can a night guard shift your teeth?

A night guard will not shift your teeth if the impression of your teeth is correct and the guard is made properly. This appliance is not an active appliance, it is a passive appliance. If the guard does not fit well and you have to force it on your teeth, it can move your teeth. The appliance should fit on your teeth easily. If your teeth hurt after wearing the guard for a bit, that means it doesn’t fit well and may move your teeth. Good luck. Dr. Randall Wing READ MORE

  • Can flossing loosen metal braces?

No. The floss goes in between the teeth and the brackets are cemented to the front of the tooth. Flossing is essential with braces. I would recommend “superfloss”. Thread the floss underneath the wire, floss between the two teeth in the area, and then thread the floss out. Go to the next tooth and repeat. READ MORE

  • What can you not do after wisdom teeth removal?

The biggest goal after a wisdom tooth is removed is to avoid what is called a “dry socket”. A blood clot needs to form in the socket left when the tooth is removed. If this blood clot is dislodged, the bone is exposed causing this dry socket. This is an extremely painful problem. So, to avoid this and permit quick and good healing, you must not drink through a straw or forcefully spit out. Make sure you bite on damp gauze changing it every 15 minutes until you think the bleeding is stopped. If you feel like you have extra blood in your mouth, just let it roll out of your mouth into a sink without forceful spitting. Remember that the blood is mixing with your saliva, so it may seem like you have more blood in your mouth than you really do. I would also stick to softer foods for a week. I hope this helps. • What happens if your brace breaks?

Contact your orthodontist and it can easily be recemented. That happens quite often. READ MORE

  • How do you floss under braces?

To floss with braces, you need a product called “superfloss”. It has a stiff end that you thread underneath the bracket first, then you can floss that tooth. Slide the floss out, then repeat for the next tooth. There will be instructions on the package. You should be able to get this product at a pharmacy or through your orthodontist. I give it out to my patients. READ MORE

  • How can I take care of my teeth with braces?

It is clearly more difficult to take care of your teeth with braces. Brushing around all of the edges of all of your brackets is the first thing to concentrate on. Take extra time to do this. A waterpick is a very important aid to brushing to blast away extra food particles in hard to get crevices. Flossing is a must! This can be tedious, but is crucial. Superfloss is used to clean in between the teeth and braces. You can also add a fluoride mouth rinse once daily. The last issue thing is diet. Limit sticky sugary foods. You do not want to get white spots on your teeth around your brackets. These spots are called “decalcification”, which is a breakdown in the enamel, or a precavity. Your orthodontist should be checking your teeth at monthly adjustments to make sure you are practicing proper oral hygiene. READ MORE

  • My daughter has all of her baby teeth in. What should I bring her to dentist?

The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry actually recommends a first dental visit by the child’s first birthday. A lot can happen in a short period of time, including decay from nighttime feeding. I would set up an appointment to have your child checked now. READ MORE

  • What is the best way to remove stuck food particles in children's teeth?

Proper brushing is still the best way to remove these particles. Please be persistent in brushing even though she resists. You are preventing more problems than you might think by not giving in. If she is quite difficult, you can lay her back on the bed, etc, have someone else hold her while you get in and brush. She will soon discover that brushing is done routinely and her behavior will improve in time. READ MORE

  • Does Invisalign mess up your bite?

The Invisalign process itself does not mess up your bite. The appliances need to be engineered properly and the patient needs to wear the appliances as directed. This is a lot of responsibility on the young patient. With braces, the patient has no control because the braces are fixed. All the control is in the orthodontist’s hands. READ MORE

  • What is a home remedy for tooth pain?

Systemic over the counter pain medication is most effective for tooth pain. Ambesol or Oragel can have some mild numbing effect on soft tissue pain. Be careful though. Pain is a warning. It is best to see a dentist to find out the source of the pain. READ MORE

  • Are braces supposed to make your teeth feel tight?

Yes. Before his brackets were placed, each tooth was independent. Now that he has braces, all the teeth are now connected through the arch wire and are beginning to move. This is where the tight feeling comes from. READ MORE

  • Is it normal to have toothache after a dental cleaning?

It is common to have some mild generalized discomfort after a thorough deep cleaning, but to have a single toothache is not common. Your dentist should look for possible other causes of this singular discomfort. READ MORE

  • Why does my tooth hurt after my braces were tightened?

Discomfort after an orthodontist adjustment is normal. The degree of discomfort has to do with what exactly is done during that adjustment. A heavy wire might be placed. A single tooth may need to be rotated or move a good distance. These are examples of when a single tooth might be more sensitive than others. READ MORE

  • Are bleeding gums in kids a cause of concern?

You should absolutely be concerned. It sounds like he has gingivitis, which is inflammation in his gums. In a 14 year old, it is usually caused by poor brushing especially along the gum line. If this is the case, changing his brushing technique will prevent the bleeding. An antiseptic mouth rinse once daily will also help. Please see a dentist to determine the source of the bleeding though and rule out other systemic problems that might relate to the bleeding. READ MORE

  • Can a 14 year old get Invisalign?

Yes. That is actually a good age because most of the permanent teeth are likely to be in. READ MORE

  • Is it normal for wisdom teeth to come in at 17?

Yes. The common age is between 17 and 18. Some get them earlier and some get them later. READ MORE

  • How long should you wait to eat after getting braces?

There is no waiting time. He can eat right after. Your orthodontist should review however what foods he can have and which he should avoid in the long term though. READ MORE

  • Is it okay to use Sensodyne for children?

I would not recommend it. Sensitive teeth in adults is different from that of a child. He or she should see a dentist to determine the source of the discomfort. READ MORE
