Get to know Nephrologist Dr. Mario A. Torres, who serves patients throughout the State of Arizona.

Recognized as a proactive, detail-oriented physician, Dr. Torres has extensive experience in the management of all aspects of nephrology, interventional nephrology, and dialysis medical directorships. He treats and manages adult patients with hypertension, kidney diseases and chronic kidney disease/kidney failure, protein in the urine, kidney stones, cysts of the kidneys, kidney transplants and dialysis.

Currently, he is in practice with Southwest Kidney Institute, PLC, seeing patients at the offices in Fort Mohave, Kingman, and Lake Havasu, Arizona.

A proud, founding member of Renal Care Organization, Southwest Kidney Institute, PLC, provides comprehensive treatment for acute and chronic kidney disease, end-stage renal disease, hypertension, kidney stones, kidney transplant, and electrolyte disorders. Its mission is to improve the lives of patients by providing customized, comprehensive, high quality kidney care.

Having been in the practice of nephrology and hypertension for over 25 years, Dr Torres believes in educating patients about their kidney or blood pressure issues and how to protect and preserve their kidneys and overall health. Spending time and communicating is his “old school” approach that has served him and his patients well and seems a lost art in medicine.

Licensed to practice medicine in Arizona, he holds privileges at Kingman Regional Medical Center, Valley View Medical Center, and Havasu Regional Medical Center (serving as the Chief of the Department of Medicine & member of the Medical Executive Committee). He is also on active staff at Fresenius Dialysis Centers of Arizona in Lake Havasu, Kingman, Parker, & Bullhead City, Arizona.

With a broad educational background, Dr. Torres graduated with his Associate of Science degree in Biomedical Sciences from the University of California, Irvine and Golden West College in 1978. He then went on to earn his medical degree from Eastern Central University in the Domenican Republic in 1982. Furthering his education, he performed his internship in internal medicine at St Barnabas Medical Center in 1984, and his residency in internal medicine at Saint Peter’s University Hospital in 1987. This was followed by a residency in internal medicine and fellowships in rheumatology and nephrology at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, completing his training in 1991.

Among his clinical experience, he served as the Medical Director of the Acute Dialysis Program at Our Lady of Lourdes Dialysis Center (2012 – 2015), the Medical Director of Dialysis Services at Our Lady of Lourdes Dialysis Center (2010 – 2015), the Medical Director of the Mt. Laurel Dialysis Unit at Davita Dialysis Center (2010 – 2015), the Medical Director of the DaVita Lourdes Innova Dialysis (2009 – 2015), an interventional nephrologist at Vascular Access Center in Mount Laurel (2008 – 2015), the Chief of Division of Nephrology at Our Lady of Lourdes Dialysis Center (2001 – 2015), on active staff at Kennedy Memorial Hospital (1994 – 2015), on active staff at Our Lady of Lourdes Dialysis Center (1991 – 2015), in private practice at Haddon Renal Medical Specialists (1991 – 2015), and on active staff at Virtual Health System at various New Jersey locations (1991 – 2015).

At Our Lady of Lourdes Regional Medical Center, Dr. Torres served as the Vice President of the Medical Executive Committee (2014 – 2015), the Secretary of the Medical Executive Committee (2010 – 2013), a member of the Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee (1999 – 2000), a member of the Renal Service Performance Improvement Oversight Committee (1996 – 2015), a member of the Critical Care Committee (1993 – 1996), and as a member of the Dialysis Performance Improvement Committee (1992 – 2015).

Among his professional affiliations, he is a member of the American Society of Diagnostic and Interventional Nephrology, the Camden County Medical Society, the Medical Society of New Jersey, the Renal Physicians Association, and the American Society of Nephrology.

As a testament to his success, Dr. Torres is board-certified in internal medicine and nephrology by the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM). The ABIM is a physician-led, non-profit, independent evaluation organization driven by doctors who want to achieve higher standards for better care in a rapidly changing world.

In addition to having conducted numerous presentations and publications, he is the recipient of the Upjohn Young Investigator Award (1988).

Nephrology is a specialty of medicine and pediatrics that concerns itself with the kidneys. It is the study of normal kidney function and kidney disease, the preservation of kidney health, and the treatment of kidney disease, from diet and medication to renal replacement therapy. Nephrologists have advanced training in treating kidney disease. They diagnose and treat kidney failure, as well as help patients by prescribing medications, offering special diet advice, and coordinating dialysis care or kidney transplantation when it becomes necessary.

Happily married, Dr. Torres is bilingual in English and Spanish.
