Charles R. Sims III, MD, a board-certified anesthesiologist with subspecialty certification in critical care medicine, continues to make significant contributions to the field of anesthesiology and patient care at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. With a focus on enhancing recovery after surgery and improving safety and quality in healthcare, Dr. Sims recently became the Chair of Quality for Mayo Clinic in Rochester and remains Vice Chair of Safety and Quality and Assistant Professor in the Department of Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine.

Dr. Sims specializes in providing anesthesia for a variety of complex surgical procedures, including thoracic, orthopedic, spine, plastic, and solid-organ transplant surgeries. His commitment to patient safety and quality care is reflected in his development of goal-directed therapy algorithms and enhanced recovery pathways, which aim to streamline surgical recovery and minimize complications.

“I believe that through multidisciplinary collaboration, data-driven efficiency, and process improvements, we can significantly improve patient outcomes,” stated Dr. Sims. “My goal is to ensure that every patient receives the highest standard of care, particularly during complex surgical procedures.”

A 2008 graduate of the University of Missouri-St. Louis, where he earned his Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry and Biotechnology with Magna Cum Laude honors, Dr. Sims went on to obtain his Medical Degree from the University of Mississippi School of Medicine in 2012. He completed his residency in anesthesiology at the University of Mississippi Medical Center in 2016 and furthered his training with a fellowship in anesthesiology and critical care medicine through the Mayo School of Graduate Medical Education, Mayo Clinic College of Medicine and Science in 2017.

Dr. Sims holds board certifications from the American Board of Anesthesiology in both Critical Care Medicine and Anesthesiology. His professional affiliations include active memberships in prestigious organizations such as the American Society of Anesthesiologists, the Minnesota Society of Anesthesiologists, the American Society for Enhanced Recovery, and the Anesthesia Patient Safety Foundation, among others.

Throughout his career, Dr. Sims has received numerous accolades for his dedication to education and the advancement of anesthesiology. In 2022, he was honored with the ASA-SEA Distinguished Educator in Anesthesiology Award, recognizing his exceptional contributions to medical education. His commitment to teaching was further acknowledged when he was named the 2020 recipient of the Mayo Clinic Distinguished Educator Award by both residents and faculty within the Department of Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine. He has also received the Teacher of the Year award from the Mayo Fellows Association, reflecting his influence on the next generation of anesthesiologists.

Dr. Sims’s dedication to patient care, education, and safety has not only advanced his career but has also significantly impacted the quality of anesthesiology services at Mayo Clinic.
