Get to know Pediatric Endocrinologist Dr. Lucy D. Mastrandrea, who serves patients in Buffalo, New York.

Treating children and adolescents, Dr. Mastrandrea is a fellowship-trained pediatric endocrinologist in practice with UBMD Pediatrics Outpatient Center in Buffalo, New York. Her specialities include endocrinology, pathophysiology, pediatric diabetes, pediatric endocrinology, and pediatrics.

Teaching the next generation of doctors and researching to advance care in WNY and beyond, she serves as an Associate Professor  within the Department of Pediatrics at Jacobs School of Medicine & Biomedical Sciences at the University at Buffalo.

Among her other appointments include Division Chief, Endocrinology/Diabetes, UBMD Pediatrics (2017-present); Medical Director, Diabetes Center, Oishei Children‘s Hospital (2017-present); Associate Fellowship Program Director, Endocrinology/Diabetes, University at Buffalo (2011-present); Adjunct Research Assistant Professor, Pharmacology and Toxicology, University at Buffalo Jacobs School of Medicine & Biomedical Sciences (2008-present); and Attending Physician, Endocrinology/Diabetes, Oishei Children’s Hospital (2004-present).

Following the completion of her medical degree at the University at Buffalo School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences, Dr. Mastrandrea went on to further her education. She performed her internship in pediatrics, residency in pediatrics, and fellowship in pediatric endocrinology at the University at Buffalo in 2000, 2001, and 2005, respectively. 

In 2004 and 2005, she attained board certification in pediatrics and pediatric endocrinology through the American Board of Pediatrics (ABP). The mission of the ABP is to advance child health by certifying pediatricians who meet standards of excellence and are committed to continuous learning and improvement.

A Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics, Dr. Mastrandrea is a member of the Pediatric Endocrine Society, the Endocrine Society, the American Diabetes Association, the American Academy of Pediatrics: Young Physicians Society, the Society for Pediatric Research, and the Lawson Wilkins Society of Pediatric Endocrinology/Pediatric Endocrine Society.

Her areas of research expertise include growth hormone deficiency, late endocrine effects of childhood cancer, Type 1 diabetes, Type 2 diabetes, and weight management and obesity.

Pediatric endocrinology is a medical subspecialty dealing with disorders of the endocrine glands, such as variations of physical growth and sexual development in childhood, diabetes, and many more. Pediatric endocrinologists, depending upon the age range of the patients they treat, care for patients from infancy to late adolescence and young adulthood. They treat type 1 and type 2 diabetes, growth disorders, pubertal abnormalities, obesity, differences of sex development, bone and mineral disturbances, hypoglycemia, and other disorders relating to the adrenal, parathyroid, thyroid, and pituitary glands.
