Get to know Interventional Radiologist Dr. Kirubahara Vaheesan, who serves patients throughout the State of Missouri. 

Dr. Vaheesan, an accomplished interventional radiologist, is a valued member of the SLUCare Physician Group, affiliated with SSM Health Saint Louis University Hospital, SSM Health Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital, and SSM Health St. Mary’s Hospital – St. Louis. His expertise extends to treating both adult and pediatric patients across a spectrum of medical conditions.

His practice encompasses cutting-edge interventional oncology treatments, interventions associated with solid organ transplantation, as well as procedures addressing kidney, chest, gastrointestinal, prostate, and gynecologic issues. Additionally, he specializes in arterial and venous interventions, along with trauma-related procedures.

Having earned his Medical Degree from Tirunelveli Medical College in 1989, Dr. Vaheesan completed his internship at the same institution. He pursued his residency at Mahatma Gandhi Medical College, followed by fellowships at Albert Einstein School of Medicine-Long Island and Jackson Memorial Hospital in the United States.

Committed to maintaining high standards of professional development, Dr. Vaheesan is board certified in interventional radiology and diagnostic radiology by the American Board of Radiology (ABR). The ABR is a not-for-profit physician-led organization that oversees the certification and ongoing professional development of specialists in diagnostic radiology, interventional radiology, radiation oncology, and medical physics.

Active in professional circles, Dr. Vaheesan holds membership in prestigious organizations such as the Society of Interventional Radiology, the Radiological Society of North America, and the Indian Radiological and Imaging Association. His research interests include tumor ablations, liver transplant-related interventions, and ultrasound-assisted, catheter-directed thrombolysis (dissolution of blood clots).

Sharing his wealth of knowledge as a Professor in the Department of Radiology at Saint Louis University School of Medicine, Dr. Vaheesan contributes to the education and training of future medical professionals.

Interventional radiology is a medical specialty that performs various minimally-invasive procedures using medical imaging guidance, such as x-ray fluoroscopy, computed tomography, magnetic resonance imaging, or ultrasound. Interventional radiologists diagnose and treat disease. They treat a wide range of conditions in the body by inserting various small tools, such as catheters or wires from outside the body. X-ray and imaging techniques such as CT and ultrasound help guide the radiologist.

On a more personal note, Dr. Vaheesan speaks several languages, including English, Tamil, Hindi, and Malayalam.
