Dr. Gregory Johnson serves as Chief Executive Officer for Sound Physicians’ hospital medicine division. His areas of focus include clinical performance excellence, leadership development, clinical innovation and specialty integration. Several of his programs have received system and national awards for outstanding clinical performance. Dr. Johnson also serves as Chief Diversity Officer for Sound Physicians. His mandate is to enhance the organization’s approach to mitigating bias throughout the practice; to measurably improve organizational inclusivity; and to utilize Sound’s national scale to impact healthcare disparities.

Get to know Internist Dr. Gregory R. Johnson, who serves patients throughout the State of Texas.
Dr. Johnson is the Chief Executive Officer of the Division of Hospital Medicine at Sound Physicians. He is responsible for clinical leadership and initiatives, including clinical management, service line integration, and dissemination of innovative staffing models across the organization. A number of his programs received system and national awards for clinical performance.
A leader at Sound Physicians since 2009, Dr. Johnson also serves as Chief Diversity Officer. His mandate is to enhance the organization’s approach to educating clinicians and non-clinicians with respect to bias and to identify opportunities to utilize Sound’s national scale to impact healthcare disparities.
A graduate of Dartmouth College, Dr. Johnson maintains a Clinical Associate Professorship at his medical school alma mater, the McGovern School of Medicine at the University of Texas Health Science Center in Houston. He completed his residency training in both internal medicine and family practice at the Ochsner Clinic in New Orleans, where he served as chief resident.
Staying current with the latest advancements in medicine through participation in the Maintenance of Certification program, Dr. Johnson is a Diplomate of the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM). The ABIM is a physician-led, non-profit, independent evaluation organization driven by doctors who want to achieve higher standards for better care in a rapidly changing world.
On professional level, Dr. Johnson is an active member of the American College of Physicians, the American Academy of Family Physicians, and the American Medical Association. He is also a Senior Fellow in Hospital Medicine (SFHM) and an active member of the Texas Medical Association, where he currently serves on its Foundation board as treasurer.
Internal medicine is the medical specialty dealing with the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of adult diseases. Physicians specializing in internal medicine are called internists. They manage and prevent common and complex diseases by providing comprehensive care and promoting overall well-being.
Dr. Johnson’s outstanding contributions to healthcare have earned him well-deserved recognition as one of Becker’s Healthcare’s esteemed “149 Black Healthcare Leaders to Know in 2023.” In addition to his impactful work in the healthcare field, he has authored articles that shed light on healthcare disparities and offer valuable insights into medical leadership.
On a more personal level, Dr. Johnson finds joy and fulfillment in his role as a US soccer referee, where he contributes to the world of sports, and he also enjoys the invigorating pursuit of cycling.
