Buttock/leg soreness?
Hello, I would agree this sounds like compression of the L5/S1 nerve root (aka sciatica). Depending on where and how severe the nerve is compressed treatment can range from anything from physical therapy to surgical decompression. First step in management is to obtain an MRI of the lumbar spine and have a specialist or your physician interpret the MRI findings. Good luck. Erik Curtis, MD READ MORE
Is there a cure for meningioma?
Yes there is a cure. 5x5x3 is actually somewhat large. You are absolutely correct that most meningiomas are benign in nature, but they can cause adverse consequences. Mainly they irritate the underlying brain and can cause swelling (edema) and possibly seizures. While typically slow growing they will eventually grow large enough without treatment that usually they will cause problems. Cranial vertex is a favorable location as far as surgical removal goes. If it were me I would find a neurosurgeon I trust and let him/her surgically remove it. If it is successfully removed remember this can result in a cure! Few things in medicine can result in a total cure these days. Benign meningioma removal is one. Good luck! READ MORE
Is surgery required for a patient who has suffered from a stroke?
I am sorry to hear that. I hope he pulls through. It depends on the type of stroke he had and where it is located and how large. Given his age I think it is very reasonable for your doctor to recommend surgery or non-surgical medical management as well. You have to trust the doctors who are there and can take an accurate history and physical examination as well as look at his radiographic images. My thoughts are with you. READ MORE
