Get to know Interventional Cardiologist and Vascular Specialist Dr. Peter M. Farrugia, who serves patients in Colts Neck, New Jersey.

Dr. Farrugia is an interventional cardiologist and vascular specialist who has spent the last 10 years of his career working in Monmouth and Ocean County in a variety of roles specializing in cardiac and vascular care.

Currently, he is the CEO of Advanced Heart and Vascular of Central Jersey, a cardiac and vascular practice that removes the corporate barriers to care, and focuses more on the physician patient relationship and puts the patient above all.

His hospital affiliations include Monmouth Medical Center, Long Branch Campus; Newark Beth Israel Medical Center; and Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick.

A proud first generation American and the third son of a Maltese immigrant, Dr. Farrugia was born on Long Island, graduating from high school as an AP scholar with distinction. Following high school, he attended King’s College in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania where he met his loving wife, Erin. He graduated Summa Cum Laude with a dual Degree in Biology and Molecular Biology, having been successful in publishing research on advanced molecular techniques. Dr. Farrugia then pursued medical school at the Renaissance School of Medicine at Stony Brook University.

As a fourth year medical student, he married his college sweetheart. He then began his post graduate medical education in the Internal Medicine Program at SUNY Stony Brook. Following this, Dr. Farrugia had the honor of working at St Vincent’s Catholic Medical Center in Manhattan for his fellowship in cardiovascular disease. This experience fortified his drive to deliver the highest quality care to the people who needed it the most. He was trained in the most advanced techniques, becoming an expert in radial artery catheterization and this is where he started his training in endovascular techniques. After his fellowship in general cardiology, Dr Farrugia pursued his training in interventional cardiology at Winthrop University Hospital on Long Island.

In July of 2011, he and his family moved to New Jersey to pursue his career as an interventional cardiologist and vascular specialist. Dr. Farrugia spent 8 years working for Barnabas Health Medical Group, functioning as the Director of Outpatient Vascular Medicine and the Chief of the Cardiac Catheterization Lab at Monmouth Medical Center. That experience has led him to develop an improved concept for care delivery.

Receiving board certification in cardiovascular disease and interventional cardiology, the doctor is a Diplomate of the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM), The ABIM is a physician-led, non-profit, independent evaluation organization driven by doctors who want to achieve higher standards for better care in a rapidly changing world.

Dedicated to excellence in heart health, Dr. Farrugia is a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology (FACC) and a Registered Physician in Vascular Interpretation (RPVI).

Interventional cardiology is a branch of cardiology that deals specifically with the catheter based treatment of structural heart diseases. An interventional cardiologist is a cardiologist with one to two years of additional education and training in diagnosing and treating cardiovascular disease as well as congenital (present at birth) and structural heart conditions through catheter-based procedures, such as angioplasty and stenting.

Vascular surgery is a surgical subspecialty in which vascular diseases involving the arteries, veins, or lymphatic vessels, are managed by medical therapy, minimally-invasive catheter procedures and surgical reconstruction. A vascular doctor, vascular specialist or vascular surgeon treats vascular problems. They treat a wide range of issues that involve the arteries and veins, such as blocked or narrow blood vessels.

A devoted husband and father, Dr. and Mrs. Farrugia have been blessed with 4 beautiful children – Samantha, Vincent, Brianna, and Thomas, and an energetic Labradoodle named Private. They are training in ballroom dancing, having been certified up to Bronze Level 3 in several dances.

Outside of the office, Dr. Farrugia coaches little league baseball, basketball, and softball.
