Get to know Pediatric Cardiologist, Dr. Marjorie Gayanilo, who serves the Detroit, Michigan area at several area hospitals, including St. Joseph Mercy Oakland. Dr. Gayanilo attended medical school at Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School and continued her education with a residency in pediatrics at the New York Presbyterian Hospital. Then, Dr. Gayanilo completed a fellowship in pediatric cardiology at the Jackson Memorial Hospital – Jackson Health System. She has been certified in pediatrics and pediatric cardiology by the American Board of Pediatrics. Having been in practice for over ten years, Dr. Gayanilo diagnoses and treats her problems in children and infants. She is on staff at Children’s Hospital of Michigan which allows her to see a wide variety of patients throughout the course of her career. To stay current in her field, Dr. Gayanilo participates in industry research and has published her findings in many prestigious medical journals, including Circulation: Heart Failure and the Journal of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology. Dr. Gayanilo treats conditions ranging from cardiomyopathy to congenital anomalies of the heart in children and young adults. She aims to treat each patient with care and empathy because it is a major part of her philosophy both inside and outside of her practice. When treating children and young adults, Dr. Gayanilo knows how to relate to her patients and make them comfortable every step of the way. Cardiology is a branch of pediatrics and internal medicine. A cardiologist is not the same as a cardiac surgeon. A cardiac surgeon opens the chest and performs heart surgery. A cardiologist specializes in diagnosing and treating diseases of the cardiovascular system. The cardiologist will carry out tests, and they may some do procedures, such as heart catheterizations, angioplasty, or inserting a pacemaker. Heart disease relates specifically to the heart, while cardiovascular disease affects the heart, the blood vessels, or both. Dr. Gayanilo’s combination of skill in cardiology and pediatrics make her one of the top doctors in the Detroit area. Because she sees many different patients at many different hospitals, Dr. Gayanilo can make a difference in many patients’ lives.
