Get to know Research & Rheumatology Specialist Dr. Joel M. Kremer, who serves patients in Albany, New York. Dr. Joel Kremer is the Director of the Research division at The Center for Rheumatology. The Center for Rheumatology, LLP is the largest rheumatology practice in Upstate New York for the diagnosis and care of individuals with arthritis, osteoporosis, autoimmune and musculoskeletal disease and for investigation of new treatments for these disorders. As the major regional center in a rapidly evolving field, their mission is to be a center of excellence in the diagnosis and care of individuals with rheumatic diseases, in the development of new treatments, and to make themselves a resource in the education of their patients, the medical community, and the public at large. In addition to his role as Director of the Research Division at The Center for Rheumatology, Dr. Kremer is the Pfaff Family Professor of Medicine at the Albany Medical College. He is also the Founder of The Consortium of Rheumatology Researchers of North America (Corrona), a national organization dedicated to advancing medical research and improving patient care by providing unique, proprietary data on treatment efficacy and outcomes of patients with autoimmune diseases in a real-world setting. Dr. Kremer graduated from the Temple University School of Medicine in 1974, where he was elected to the Alpha Omega Alpha honorary society. Thereafter, he completed both a residency in Internal Medicine and fellowship in Rheumatology at The Albany Medical Center Hospital and The Albany Medical College. Dr. Kremer is board-certified in Internal Medicine and Rheumatology by the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM), a physician-led, non-profit, independent evaluation organization driven by doctors who want to achieve higher standards for better care in a rapidly changing world.. He also serves on the Editorial Board of and The Journal of Rheumatology. Between 1979 and 2000, Dr. Kremer served on the full time faculty of The Albany Medical College. He was appointed as Professor of Medicine in 1990 and became the Head of the Division of Rheumatology in 1992. Furthermore, Dr. Kremer has been active in The American College Rheumatology, serving as the President of the Northeast Region in 1992. Dr Kremer is President and board chairman of The CORRONA Research Foundation, a not-for-profit research 501(c)3 that allows access to Corrona data for qualified academic investigators. Dr. Kremer has contributed over 282 original articles to the scientific literature. He has also authored 18 book chapters, edited 3 texts on the rheumatic diseases, and has been an invited lecturer at numerous academic institutions throughout the United States and internationally. In 1977, Dr. Kremer was awarded the Virginia Engalitcheff award of the Arthritis Foundation at a ceremony in Denver, Colorado for his work on methotrexate in patients with rheumatoid arthritis. The award is given to an individual who has “improved the quality of life of patients with arthritis over the past ten years.” Rheumatology is a branch of medicine devoted to the diagnosis and therapy of rheumatic diseases. As a rheumatologist, Dr. Kremer specializes in treating diseases that affect the joints, muscles, and bones, including those known as autoimmune conditions, or rheumatic diseases. He is world renowned for his advances in Research in the field of Rheumatology and originator of the world’s largest RA database, the Corrona Registry.
