Dr. Jerry Pratt joined Borgess Medical Center, the Heart Center for Excellence in July, 2012 after retiring as a Colonel from the United States Air Force with a distinguished career. He is currently the Medical Director for Thoracic Surgery at Borgess Medical Center. Dr. Pratt specializes in adult cardiac surgery, with interests in minimally invasive cardiac and thoracic surgery, robotic surgery, aortic surgery, atrial fibrillation, and mitral valvular disease.     1-15-2010. Dr. Pratt saved my life he did a triple by pass CABG on me and it worked perfect, I was out of the hospital in 4.5 days. Recovery was fast. Could not of been luckier to of had one of the best heart surgeons in the World in my town and he was here for a week It was a Friday he left town on Monday. It was a miracle. I died twice before I got to him. Thank you Dr Pratt for saving my life. Jim Johnson

Prior to his current endeavors, he served as an Associate Clinical Professor of Surgery at the UC Davis Medical Center from 2008 to 2016, Chief of Cardiothoracic Surgery at David Grant Medical Center from 2008 to 2012, and Cardiac and Chief Consultant to the Surgeon General for Cardiothoracic Surgery for the United States Air Force from 2007 to 2012. He is a retired Colonel of the U.S. Air Force, where he served from 1992 until 2012.

A graduate of the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, he earned his Medical Degree from Virginia Commonwealth University, Medical College of Virginia, in Richmond in 1992. He then went on to complete his residency in general surgery while in the military from Wilford Hall Medical Center at Lackland AFB, Texas. Subsequently, he completed a research fellowship in cardiopulmonary physiology at The Ohio State University College of Medicine in Columbus, Ohio. In addition, he completed an additional residency in cardiothoracic surgery at the same educational venue in 2000. 

The doctor is board-certified by the American Board of Surgery, an independent, nonprofit organization founded in 1937 to provide board certification to individuals who have met a defined standard of education, training, and knowledge in the field of surgery. He is also board-certified in thoracic and cardiac surgery by the American Board of Thoracic Surgery. 

In order to stay up to date in his field, Dr. Pratt remains a member of several professional organizations, including the American College of Chest Physicians, the Society of Thoracic Surgeons, the Western Thoracic Surgical Association, and the American Heart Association. Moreover, he is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology. 

Cardiothoracic surgery, also known as thoracic surgery, is the field of medicine involved in surgical treatment of organs inside the thorax. Cardiothoracic surgeons are medical doctors who specialize in surgical procedures inside the thorax, which may involve the heart, lungs, esophagus, and other organs in the chest. Alongside performing surgery, they also diagnose and treat diseases of these organs. Dr. Pratt specializes in adult cardiac surgery with interests in minimally invasive cardiac and thoracic surgery, robotic surgery, aortic surgery, atrial fibrillation, and mitral valvular disease.
