Get to know Ophthalmologist Dr. William D. Willerson, Jr., who serves the San Antonio, Texas area as a retired physician. Dr. Willerson graduated from University of Texas Southwestern Medical School with his Medical Degree in 1967, giving him over five decades of experience in his field. He then completed his internship with the Grady Health System, followed by a residency with the University of California, San Francisco, the University of Texas Southwestern - Parkland Health & Hospital System, and the Medical College of Wisconsin Affiliated Hospitals. Dr. Willerson is dual certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine and the American Board of Ophthalmology. To stay up to date in his field he remains a professional member of the American College of Surgeons and a Fellow of the American Academy of Ophthalmology. While he is currently retired, he is affiliated with Baptist Medical Center. Ophthalmology is a branch of medicine and surgery that deals with the anatomy, physiology and diseases of the eyeball and orbit. An ophthalmologist is a specialist in medical and surgical eye disease. Eye surgery, also known as ocular surgery, is surgery performed on the eye or its adnexa by an ophthalmologist.The eye is a fragile organ, and requires extreme care before, during, and after a surgical procedure. An expert eye surgeon is responsible for selecting the appropriate surgical procedure for the patient, and for taking the necessary safety precautions. Now that Dr. Willerson is retired, he enjoys spending his free time golfing.
