Get to know Neurosurgeon Dr. Damirez Fossett, who serves patients in Washington, D.C.

As a leading neurosurgeon and Chief of Neurosurgery at Howard University Hospital, Dr. Fossett treats patients in the Washington District of Columbia area. 

In his day-to-day work, he works with patients who suffer from trauma, brain tumors or spinal disease. He also oversees administrative tasks in the Department of Neurosurgery.

Having been in practice for over three decades, Dr. Fossett also holds hospital privileges at Adventist HealthCare Shady Grove Medical Center, and treats patients from his private practice in Silver Springs, Maryland.

Teaching the next generation of medical professionals, he serves as an Assistant Professor of Surgery at Howard University College of Medicine. 

Before embarking on his professional journey, Dr. Fossett graduated with his medical degree from The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in Baltimore, Maryland in 1985. He then completed his residency in neurosurgery at Howard University Hospital in 2012.

As a result of his education and training, the doctor attained board certification in neurological surgery through the American Board of Neurological Surgery (ABNS). The broad aim of the ABNS is to encourage the study, improve the practice, elevate the standards and advance the science of neurological surgery and thereby serve the cause of public health.

Holding fellowship status, Dr. Fossett is a Fellow of the American Academy of Neurological Surgery (FAANS) and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons (FACS).

Neurology is a branch of medicine dealing with disorders of the nervous system. Neurosurgeons diagnose, assess, and perform surgery to treat disorders of the nervous system. They operate on the central nervous system (brain and spinal cord) and the peripheral nervous system which can involve any area of the body.

Throughout his extensive career, Dr. Fossett has written numerous articles with his peers in his field of specialty, such as “The role of hyperbaric oxygen in the management of subarachnoid hemorrhage”,”Branches of the anterior cerebral artery near the anterior communicating artery complex: an anatomic study and surgical perspective”, and “Lateral posterior fossa venous sinus relationships to surface landmarks.”

Listed among the SuperDoctors, Dr. Fossett is the recipient of the Patients’ Choice Award (2018) and Compassionate Doctor Recognition (2018) from vitals.com. 

On a more personal note, he speaks several languages, including English, Spanish, and Amharic.
