A trusted colorectal surgeon, Dr. Shawki welcomes patients at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. Academically, Dr. Shawki earned his medical degree and Master of Science degree from the Suez Canal University School of Medicine in Egypt. After relocating to the United States, he completed his research fellowship, residency in general surgery, and fellowship in colon and rectal surgery at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation.

An authority in his field, the doctor is board-certified in both colon and rectal surgery and general surgery by the American Board of Colorectal Surgery (ABCRS) and the American Board of Surgery (ABS). The ABCRS and ABS are both an independent, non-profit organization founded for the purpose of certifying surgeons who have met a defined standard of education, training, and knowledge.

Maintaining fellowship status, he is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons (FACS), and a Fellow of the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons (FASCRS).

On a professional level, Dr. Shawki is an active member of the Medical Syndicate of Egypt, the Society for Surgery of the Alimentary Tract, the International Society of University Colon and Rectal Surgeons, the Midwest Surgical Quality Subcommittee, and the Quality of Life Association.

In addition to his compassion towards his patient care, he is also committed to educating and teaching his medical students, residents and fellows. He is actively participating in research, as well as active reviewer to multiple national and international journals.

Colorectal surgery is a field in medicine dealing with disorders of the rectum, anus, and colon. It covers caring for patients with cancers of the colon, rectum and anus along with other benign disorders like inflammatory bowel disease (Ulcerative Colitis and Crohn’s Disease), diverticulitis and a myriad of anorectal pathologies like hemorrhoids, fistulas, abscesses and fissures.

Recognized as a Top Doctor by Castle Connolly Magazine in 2019, Dr. Shawki has been the recipient of the Levy Award in Surgery (2015), Outstanding Leadership Award (2015), and Administrative Chief Resident Appreciation Award (2015) by Cleveland Clinic.
