The UK Markey Cancer Center was founded in 1983 and is a dedicated matrix cancer center established as an integral part of the University of Kentucky and the UK HealthCare enterprise. It has developed a variety of specialized multidisciplinary teams to evaluate and treat the disease, which means that physicians and nurses from multiple specialties work together with each patient to develop the best treatment plan for their particular circumstances.

Back in the early days of her academic career, Dr. Ramlal earned her medical degree from the University of the West Indies Faculty of Medical Science in 2005. She then went on to complete her residency in internal medicine at the University of Florida Health Science Center, Jacksonville in 2012, and her fellowship in hematology & medical oncology at St. Louis University Hospital in 2015. Finally, she completed an additional fellowship in stem cell transplantation at the MD Anderson Cancer Center in 2016.

Distinguished as a Fellow of the American College of Physicians (FACP), the doctor attained board certification in internal medicine, hematology, and medical oncology through the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM). The ABIM is a physician-led, non-profit, independent evaluation organization driven by doctors who want to achieve higher standards for better care in a rapidly changing world.

Remaining up to date in her field, she is an active member of the American Society of Hematology, and the American Society of Clinical Oncology.
