Get to know Neurologist Dr. Lawrence A. Schaeffer, who serves patients in Amarillo, Texas.

He diagnoses and treats disorders of the nervous system, including headache disorders, epilepsy or seizures, traumatic brain injury, sleep disorders, cerebral palsy, infections of the peripheral nervous system, movement disorders, neoplasms, spinal cord disorders, as well as speech and language disorders, among others. 

A 1981 graduate of the Anahuac University in Mexico, Dr. Schaeffer completed his internship in internal medicine/surgery at the National Institute of Nutrition in Mexico City in 1981, his internship in pediatrics / obstetrics-gynecology at the National Institute of Perinatology in 1982, and his internship in social services in Mexico City in 1983.

Upon relocating to the United States, he went on to complete his residency in internal medicine at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center in El Paso, followed by his fellowship in neurology at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School in Dallas. He opened his practice in Amarillo in 1997. 

The doctor is board-certified in neurology by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology, which is a not-for-profit corporation dedicated to promoting high-quality patient care for the public through the initial and continuing certification of psychiatrists and neurologists. 

Moreover, he is board-certified in internal medicine by the American Board of Internal Medicine, a physician-led, non-profit, independent evaluation organization driven by doctors who want to achieve higher standards for better care in a rapidly changing world.

Neurology is a branch of medicine dealing with disorders of the nervous system. Neurologists are licensed medical specialists who diagnose and treat disorders that affect the brain, spinal cord, nerves, and muscles of patients. They examine a patient’s mental and physical status, conduct medical tests and scans, and evaluate the results to diagnose and treat the patient.

In his personal life, Dr. Schaeffer is married.
