Get to know Oncologist Dr. Lukas D. Wartman, who serves patients in St. Louis, Missouri.

Dr. Wartman is a well-versed oncologist whose areas of clinical interest include the treatment of acute and chronic leukemia in adults, blood cancer, bone marrow transplant, lymphoblastic leukemia, myelogenous leukemia, and lymphocytic leukemia. Being a leukemia survivor himself, he is involved in making clinical sequencing available for cancer patients treated at the Siteman Cancer Center.

Siteman Cancer Center at Barnes-Jewish Hospital and Washington University School of Medicine is a cancer treatment, research, and education institution with six locations in the St. Louis area. It is the only cancer center in Missouri to hold the prestigious Comprehensive Cancer Center designation and “Exceptional” rating from the National Cancer Institute and membership in the National Comprehensive Cancer Network. Its mission is to prevent cancer in the community and transform cancer patient care through scientific discovery.

Alongside his clinical role, Dr. Wartman has been serving as an Assistant Professor within the Division of Oncology, Section of Stem Cell Biology at the Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis since 2013.

Among the doctor’s research efforts, he led the study that sequenced the first mouse model of human cancer (a mouse model of APL developed in Timothy Ley’s Lab). He recently started his own lab, which is extending the findings from that study to more than 100 banked tumors from the same model. He is studying the role of loss of function mutations in KDM6A, a histone H3K27 demethylase, in the role of AML and cancer pathogenesis. He is also an active member of The McDonnell Genome Institute at Washington University where he serves as Assistant Director of the Cancer Genomics Section. In this regard, his research interest is in using ChIP-Seq to define epigenetic changes in cancer. 

Following the completion of his Bachelor of Science degree in Molecular Biology from the University of Wisconsin in 1998, Dr. Wartman went on to obtain his medical degree from the Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis in 2005. He completed his residency in internal medicine at Barnes-Jewish Hospital in 2007, followed by his fellowships in oncology at the Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis in 2011. 

In order to stay up to date in his field, he remains a member of the American Society of Hematology, the American Society of Clinical Oncology, and the American Society of Blood and Marrow Transplantation.

Furthermore, he is board-certified in internal medicine and medical oncology by the American Board of Internal Medicine, a physician-led, non-profit, independent evaluation organization driven by doctors who want to achieve higher standards for better care in a rapidly changing world.

An oncologist is a doctor who treats cancer and provides medical care for a person diagnosed with cancer. They lead a cancer treatment team of various healthcare professionals, treat patients with radiation therapy, coordinate treatment plans and prescribe various types of treatment, including chemotherapy and immunotherapy, as well as assist patients with pain management.

As a testament to his success, Dr. Wartman is the recipient of numerous awards and honors, including Albert F. Koetter, MD Distinguished Student Scholarship (1999-2003), Alpha Omega Alpha (2002), McGraw-Hill and Appleton and Lange Medical Publications Student Award (2002), Lee B. & Virginia G. Harrison Memorial Scholar (2002), The Park J. White Prize in Medical Ethics (2003), Knowlton Award for Clinical Excellence (2009), Fellows’ Award from Mayo Clinic Hematology/Oncology Review (2010), and National Institutes of Health Loan Repayment Program Award (2010-2012).
