Fort Norfolk Medical and Fort Norfolk Plaza was founded by Dr. Keith Newby, a prominent cardiologist for over ten years within the local community. The vision was to bring world-class physicians together with a dedication to medical excellence all within one facility. As of September 2010 the vision was made a tremendous reality. 

Established in the historic Fort Norfolk area of downtown Norfolk now stands a beacon and an example of improved community health care. The new nine floor, 195,890 square feet facility is a state-of-the-art, full-service medical building, providing high-tech, high quality care for the residents of Hampton Roads and beyond.

Fort Norfolk Medical comprises four target departments that consist of Cardiology, Primary Care, Urgent Care, and Diagnostic Testing. It is also active in the community through the James E. Newby Jr. MD Foundation, which is a non-profit organization dedicated to the promotion and funding of research aimed at cardiac disease and related chronic illnesses and to provide assistance to the citizens of Virginia who are in need.

The doctor’s acclaimed career in medicine began after he earned his medical degree from Eastern Virginia Medical School in 1990. He then went on to perform his residency in internal medicine at Emory University Hospital in 1993, and his fellowship in cardiovascular disease at Duke University Hospital in 1997.

Subsequent to his education, Dr. Newby Sr. attained board certification in cardiovascular disease, internal medicine, and clinical cardiac electrophysiology through the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM). The ABIM is a physician-led, non-profit, independent evaluation organization driven by doctors who want to achieve higher standards for better care in a rapidly changing world.

A Fellow of the American College of Cardiology (FACC), he is affiliated with Sentara Norfolk General Hospital.

Cardiology is a branch of medicine that deals with the disorders of the heart, as well as some parts of the circulatory system. The field includes medical diagnosis and treatment of congenital heart defects, coronary artery disease, heart failure, valvular heart disease, and electrophysiology. Cardiologists are doctors who diagnose, assess, and treat patients with diseases and defects of the heart and blood vessels (the cardiovascular system).
