Hershey, Pennsylvania – Penn State Health Children’s Hospital and Penn State Cancer Institute proudly announce Dr. Sinisa Dovat, as a leading physician-scientist and pediatric hematologist-oncologist dedicated to transforming the landscape of childhood cancer treatment. With a robust academic and clinical background, Dr. Dovat is making significant strides in understanding the genetic underpinnings of cancer, particularly through his work with the gene Ikaros.

As a Professor and Vice Chair for Basic Science Research in the Department of Pediatrics at Penn State College of Medicine, Dr. Dovat plays a pivotal role in its Division of Pediatric Hematology and Oncology. In addition to his leadership in the Four Diamonds Pediatric Cancer Research Center, he holds multiple professorships in the Departments of Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, and Pharmacology. His extensive expertise culminates in his position as the Four Diamonds Endowed Chair and Director of Translational Research in the Pediatric Experimental Therapeutics Program, where he has championed innovative approaches to pediatric cancer treatment since 2010.

Dr. Dovat’s laboratory is internationally recognized for its groundbreaking research into how specific gene abnormalities contribute to pediatric cancers. Central to his work is the exploration of the Ikaros gene, which is crucial for regulating other genes involved in leukemia. Research indicates that the absence of Ikaros in patients' cells can lead to the development of high-risk childhood leukemia, characterized by poor treatment outcomes. 

Understanding the role of Ikaros offers promising avenues for developing targeted therapies. Dr. Dovat’s lab is focused on elucidating the mechanisms by which Ikaros controls leukemia cell growth, with the ultimate goal of designing new, effective drugs that target this critical gene. His translational research aims to bridge the gap between laboratory discoveries and clinical applications, ensuring that advancements in understanding basic cancer biology lead to improved therapeutic strategies and agents.

Educated in Serbia, Dr. Dovat earned his Medical Degree from the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Novi Sad before relocating to the United States. He completed his residency in pediatrics at Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center from 1993 to 1996 and continued his fellowship in pediatric hematology/oncology at UCLA Medical Center from 1996 to 1999. 

Board certified and recognized as a Diplomate of the American Board of Pediatrics, Dr. Dovat is committed to advancing the field of pediatric oncology through both clinical practice and innovative research.
