Get to know Pediatric Neurosurgeon Dr. Timothy W. Vogel, who serves patients in Oradell, New Jersey.

Dr. Vogel is widely regarded as one of the premier pediatric neurosurgeons in the country, known for his expertise in treating brain tumors, epilepsy, traumatic brain injuries, Chiari malformations, and congenital malformations of the brain and spine. Fellowship-trained in both minimally invasive surgery and pediatric neurosurgery, he is internationally renowned as an expert on hydrocephalus, and he recently led the first successful surgery for a baby born with exencephaly.

Currently, he is the Director of Pediatric Neurosurgery at New Jersey Brain and Spine Center. “I love working with kids. I love the energy and the spirit that they have. I couldn’t imagine doing anything else.”

The Director of Pediatric Neurosurgery at Hackensack University Medical Center, he believes that a strong physician-patient-family relationship is fundamental to a good outcome for pediatric patients. He works hard to build personal connections with patients and families, and remains affiliated with Englewood Health and Holy Name Medical Center.

Nationally recognized, Dr. Vogel has developed a robust academic pediatric neurosurgery program and his clinics are based on a multidisciplinary team approach with neurosurgeon specialists, pediatricians, and oncologists so that families have coordinated and clear care plans for their children. He also introduced novel minimally-invasive pediatric neurosurgical and craniofacial treatments that he helped to describe, and is an international expert on pediatric craniofacial surgery and on understanding the cause of one of the most common neurological conditions affecting young children, hydrocephalus.

In a concerted attempt to make inroads in the treatment of this devastating condition, Dr. Vogel established the Vogel Research Lab in conjunction with the Hydrocephalus Association. The Vogel lab has been supported by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and Dr. Vogel collaborates throughout the country investigating novel genetic studies and imaging techniques related to hydrocephalus.

A graduate of Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons, Dr. Vogel performed his residency at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, where he served as chief resident. He then went on to perform his advanced fellowship training in minimally invasive surgery at Boston Children’s Hospital at Harvard University, and his fellowship in pediatric neurosurgery at St. Louis Children’s Hospital at Washington University in St. Louis.

The doctor is board-certified in neurological surgery by the American Board of Neurological Surgery, whose broad aim is to encourage the study, improve the practice, elevate the standards and advance the science of neurological surgery, and thereby serve the cause of public health.

Furthermore, he is board-certified through the American Board of Pediatric Neurological Surgery, whose broad aim is to encourage the study, improve the practice, and elevate the standards of pediatric neurological surgery, and thereby to advance the cause of public health.

An advocate for minimally invasive technology, Dr. Vogel teaches courses each year to train other neurosurgeons in this approach. He holds several patents, has published numerous papers in top medical journals, and is a sought-after presenter at international medical and association conventions. He has also completed postdoctoral fellowships at the Howard Hughes Medical Institute at the University of Iowa and at Massachusetts General Hospital at Harvard Medical School and Harvard University.

In good standing with a number of professional organizations, he is an active member of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the American Society of Craniofacial Surgery, the American Society of Human Genetics, the American Association of Neurological Surgeons, the Ciliopathy Alliance, the Congress of Neurological Surgeons, the International Society of Craniofacial Surgery, and the Society for Neuroscience.
