Can conductive hearing loss be corrected?
Hi there! Conductive hearing loss can sometimes be surgically corrected. It depends on what issue is causing the loss to begin with. An experienced otologist would be able to give you best recommendations as to whether or not surgery should be an option. READ MORE
What are some signs of vertigo?
Vertigo is not its own disease but rather a symptom (Example if you broke your arm you would experience pain as a symptom; the pain isnt the diagnosis, but a symptom of the root of the problem). Vertigo is a sensation of true spinning (which is different from feeling lightheaded, woozy, or imbalanced). It could be the symptom of another potential process like Menieres disease, positional vertigo, etc. There are many causes of dizziness and symptoms can come from a variety of possible sources. The only way to determine the cause of true vertigo is to be evaluation by an ENT and audiologist who can perform the necessary diagnostic tests. Good luck! READ MORE
What are the symptoms of hearing loss?
Tinnitus can be a sign of hearing loss, but, its common to hear temporary tinnitus that resolves like youre describing. If the tinnitus doesnt resolve, then that is more cause for concern. Its never a bad idea to have a baseline hearing examination completed! READ MORE

My mother is falling down often. Could it be a balance issues?
Hi there, if your mother is falling Id get her in to her PCP ASAP who will likely refer her to an ENT and/or physical therapist. The last thing we want is for her to get injured. Of course vertigo (true spinning vertigo) would cause falls, but there are other possibilities as well if there are issues going on with her balance systems. READ MORE
How do hearing tests work?
Well, that is a loaded question! In general, comprehensive hearing examinations are completed to discover the hearing levels across a broad frequency range. In our office, we start with looking in the ears, then proceed to checking the eardrums, then the patient listens to tones and repeats words. There is much more that goes into it depending on the needs of the patient. Feel free to look at our description on our website: https://docmercer.com/what-to-expect/ READ MORE
How do you get swimmer's ear?
Swimmers Ear is quite common without a lot of water exposure. It should clear relatively quickly with ear drops. If the problem recurs then you should discuss with the YMCA to ensure they are keeping the chemicals balanced correctly. READ MORE
Does hearing affect your speech?
Hello and thank you for this most important question. The answer is a resounding YES! If a child cannot hear well as they are trying to learn language, they have no resources for that auditory feedback. When we produce the sounds in our speech, we can hear that we are producing them correctly or incorrectly. If your child has hearing loss, its imperative that you address the issue immediately and if need be, also consult with a speech language pathologist. Good luck! READ MORE
Which hearing aids work the best?
This is surely a loaded question and one I cannot answer without knowing more about her situation. There are many types, styles, and technology levels available today. The very most important thing I would suggest is that she sees an audiologist, not a hearing aid specialist. Audiologists have doctoral degrees and will complete a comprehensive audiological evaluation (NOT a free screening!) and spend time with your grandmother to identify what her needs are. The hearing aid that is chosen should be based on a number of factors including the level of her hearing loss, dexterity concerns, activity level, and communication needs. Please take the time to research a great audiologist in your area and start there!! READ MORE
Can vertigo cause deafness?
Hello! There are certainly disorders that can affect the inner ear system as a whole (vestibular system and cochlea). True spinning vertigo is often caused by an issue in the vestibular system but it can be as simple as positional vertigo which is easily treated, or something as complex as Menieres disease and others. If you are experiencing vertigo, its best to be evaluated ASAP by a Doctor of Audiology and/or ENT. Good luck! READ MORE
I had an ear drum repair surgery four months back and now its again infected. What should I do?

What causes ear wax build up in babies?
Earwax is completely natural and is actually produced by the ear as a protective mechanism. Its especially important to note that while infants may appear to have more wax than adults, typically its not the case. It simply looks that way because their canals are so much smaller. VERY important to note is that infants have ear canals that are not fully developed yet so please DO NOT use Qtips or any other object to try to clean the ears. Using a wet wash cloth around the outside of the ear canal is typically all that is needed. Enjoy your baby! READ MORE
Is hearing loss hereditary?
Hi there, great question! Hearing loss can absolutely be hereditary and passed from generation to generation, though its not always the case. There are many other factors that cause hearing loss including noise exposure and other medical conditions. If there is a strong family history of hearing loss then we would always recommend you have a baseline hearing examination done early so that you can monitor for changes. Hope that helps! READ MORE

Ear drum question?
I would advise you to discuss this with your ENT. I’m not certain what you mean that you have an open wall in your eardrum. Perhaps you mean a perforation in the eardrum? Or that you’ve had a mastoidectomy and your ear canal has been surgically modified? Either way, best to discuss with your otolaryngologist to avoid infection. Best of luck! READ MORE
Ringing in left ear?

Foreign object in the ear canal?
If the physician was able to remove it, it should be fine. If they used water irrigation to flush it out, he could be perceiving a strange feeling as the ear dries out. If you’re concerned after a day or two, don’t hesitate to schedule him with an ENT! Take Care! READ MORE
