Get to know Colorectal Surgeon Dr. Todd D. Francone, who serves patients in Boston and Newton, Massachusetts.

Dr. Francone is a board-certified colorectal surgeon who is currently serving patients at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) in Boston, Massachusetts. MGH has been ranked among the top five hospitals in the United States by U.S. News & World Report ever since the rankings began. Guided by the needs of patients and their families, MGH aims to deliver the very best healthcare in a safe, compassionate environment; to advance that care through innovative research and education; and to improve the health and well-being of the diverse communities it serves.

Dr. Francone also serves as Chief of the Division of Colon & Rectal Surgery, and as Director of  Robotic Surgery at Newton-Wellesley Hospital. Furthermore, he serves as Associate Chair of the Department of Surgery at Newton-Wellesley Hospital. Located in Newton, Massachusetts, Newton-Wellesley Hospital is a community teaching medical center. It is affiliated with Tufts University School of Medicine and Harvard Medical School.

Prior to joining MGH, Dr. Francone served as Assistant Professor for Surgery and Oncology at the University of Rochester Medical Center, where he also obtained a master’s degree in public health. From there, he returned to Lahey Hospital & Medical Center to serve as Director for Robotic Colorectal Surgery, as well as Program Director of the Colon and Rectal Surgery Residency Program. Furthermore, he served as an instructor in medicine at Tufts Medical School.

Dr. Francone is board-certified in colon & rectal surgery by the American Board of Colon and Rectal Surgery (ABCRS). He is also board-certified in surgery by the American Board of Surgery (ABS).

Dr. Francone received his medical degree from the State University of New York Upstate Medical University. He then went on to complete his residencies at Lahey Clinic, New York Presbyterian-Cornell, and Saint Vincent’s Hospital. He also completed his fellowship training at the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center.

Colorectal surgery is a field in medicine dealing with disorders of the rectum, anus, and colon. The field is also known as proctology, but this term is now used infrequently within medicine and is most often employed to identify practices relating to the anus and rectum in particular. As a colorectal surgeon, Dr. Francone’s clinical interests include surgical treatment of colorectal malignancies, diverticulitis, and inflammatory bowel diseases. He provides treatment options through robotics, endoscopic procedures, and other minimally invasive techniques.
