An experienced general surgeon with a special interest in breast surgery, Dr. Rosenthal serves as the Chief of the Surgical Oncology / Breast Program at The START Center for Cancer Care in San Antonio, Texas.

The mission of The START Center for Cancer Care is to provide the highest-quality care for people with cancer, and help accelerate the development of new treatments in order to improve patients’ quality of life and give them real hope against cancer. In pursuit of this mission, the START Center provides world-class care, with multiple convenient locations in San Antonio and across the globe. “We bring together multiple cancer-care specialties and modalities — surgery, chemotherapy, radiation therapy, immunotherapy, integrative therapies, genetic testing of tumors — for thorough and efficient care. In addition, we make an uncommon commitment to advancing the standard of cancer care through our leadership role in cancer research.”

In the early days of his academic career, Dr. Rosenthal obtained his medical degree from the Drexel University College of Medicine in 1969. He then went on to perform his residency in general surgery at Abington Memorial Hospital, where he was chief resident of general surgery. He also served as a Major in the Medical Corps at the US Army Institute of Surgical Research, Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio, where he received the Meritorious Service Medal.

A Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, the doctor is a member of the Texas Surgical Society, the Society of Surgical Oncology, the American Society of Clinical Oncology, the American Society of Breast Surgeons, and the American Society of Breast Disease.

​With an unwavering commitment to his speciality, Dr. Rosenthal is board-certified in general surgery by the American Board of Surgery, an independent, non-profit organization located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, founded for the purpose of certifying surgeons who have met a defined standard of education, training, and knowledge.

General surgery is a surgical specialty that focuses on abdominal contents including the esophagus, stomach, small bowel, colon, liver, pancreas, gallbladder, appendix and bile ducts, and often the thyroid gland. A general surgeon performs a wide range of abdominal surgeries for many forms of intestinal and abdominal wall neoplasms, gallbladder disease, gastric and pancreatic disease. They follow the patient through critical care and surgical recovery all the way to outpatient care.
