Graduating magna cum laude with her Bachelor of Science degree from Stillman College in 1995, and her Master of Science degree in Biology from Temple University in 1997, she received her medical degree from the University of Alabama School of Medicine in 2001. She then went on to complete her residency in internal medicine at Brookwood Baptist Health in 2006, and her Master of Health Administration degree (MHA) from the University of Alabama School of Health Professionals in 2014.

An authority in her field, the doctor is board-certified in internal medicine and hospice & palliative medicine by the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM).
