Do fillings make your teeth stronger?
Wow, this is a great question and very easy and hard to answer. First, as a dentist who believes in prevention there is nothing better than your own god given teeth. Having said that, cavities and accidents happen. For the record, the silver amalgam fillings weaken teeth. Small conservative tooth colored fillings may provide the best protection, the larger any filling gets the less protection of the tooth it provides, which is why large fillings become crowns and the continued path of needing dentistry continues. Can I brush my teeth after dental implants?
There are different types of implants and different types of restorations on them. Your dentist should be happy to go over all the different ways you can keep your mouth clean, including tooth brush and tooth brush heads. All the gels I know off will lose their efficiency so I don’t know if leaving too long is an issue except in the beginning. It might cause more sensitivity than you might otherwise encounter. READ MORE

What to do if part of your tooth breaks off?
Without knowing who, what, where, when, and why, I would definitely go see your dentist immediately. These breaks don’t happen without a reason. It could be a cavity, a large filling that broke, or tooth structure. It could also be from grinding. Pain does not have to be a must in order for you to have a significant problem. Jon Engel, DDS READ MORE
Why would you need a second root canal on the same tooth?
There can be a few reasons, but the most common reason is that previous root canal is not working for some reason. Root canals are like voodoo: sometimes, they can look great on an X-ray, but still fail or look horrible on an X-ray and work. Understand if you have an issue with chronic inflammation (the most common issue with a failed root canal), you put your overall health at risk if you don’t treat it. Chronic inflammation is a major root issue of all health problems. Jon Engel READ MORE
Is it ok to brush teeth with baking soda with braces?
I personally like baking soda because it is the opposite of acidic, it is basic and your mouth hates anything acidic…everything bad happens in an acidic environment. I personally use Common Sense tooth powder, which has baking soda as its bulk. You can also use Arm and Hammer baking soda toothpaste. Jonathan Engel, DDS READ MORE

How can I remove calculus from my teeth at home?
In all honesty the work for the patient at home is to have excellent hygiene and see the hygienist on a regular basis so she can remove the tarter build up if there is any. You could always ask your hygienist if they have old instruments but I don’t know if they would give to you since you have no training in using them.. I wish I could give you a better answer, but once you have tarter, generally the professional has to remove it. Jon Engel READ MORE
How can I strengthen my gums?
This is a great question and something I am most passionate about. The most important step is first making sure you have had a good professional hygiene visit to make sure that your gums can start to heal. If you have tarter or active gum disease, you need to have professional help to remove as much of the reasons for the gum disease. For home care, it is not about average or good, you have to have excellent home care. That means using a sonicare or oral b mechanical tooth brush for at least 2 minutes 2 times a day and use it properly. It means flossing or soft picking at least once a day. It could also mean using Dakins solution as a rinse 3 times a week to help weaken and dilute the biofilm so the bacteria are free flowing in your mouth (they only do good and not bad that way). Remember, if your gums bleed when you brush, floss, or use softpicks, you have gum disease. READ MORE

What is a fixed dental bridge?
A fixed dental bridge is something that is placed in your mouth (cemented or bonded) meaning you can’t put it in and take it out. It Usually involves on crwons on the teeth to hold the bridge. A removable bridge would be a partial that is made of acrylic maybe with a metal infrastructure. It doesn’t require crowns on teeth to hold it in, but generally isn’t as good as a fixed bridge. How long do composite fillings last?
This is a loaded question. Where in the mouth is it, is it a large or a small filling, will it be under a lot of function, do you grind or clench your teeth, how is your home care, how is your diet and list goes on. I would like you to know it doesn’t matter how good your dentist is, if you don’t do the very best job with everything that you should be doing then you will increase the likelihood of failure sooner than later.
