Born in Montgomery, Alabama, Dr. Hughes is a graduate of Auburn University. She obtained her medical degree from the University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Medicine in 1986. She then completed her internship and residency at The University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston, and her fellowship in hematology and medical oncology at M.D. Anderson Cancer Center. She was also a hematology fellow at the Baylor College of Medicine, which was inclusive with the M.D. Anderson program.
Awarded with the American Cancer Society Clinical Fellowship Award in 1992, Dr. Hughes is board-certified in internal medicine, hematology, and medical oncology by the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM). The ABIM is a physician-led, non-profit, independent evaluation organization driven by doctors who want to achieve higher standards for better care in a rapidly changing world.
