Academically, Dr. Vakilian completed his medical studies, internship in internal medicine, and residency in radiation oncology at McGill University in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. He served as chief resident there in 2012. He then served as an attending radiation oncologist at the Jewish General Hospital and as a faculty lecturer within the Department of Oncology at McGill University.
Specializing in the treatment of breast, hematological, pulmonary and genito-urinary cancers, he helped run several clinical trials and authored several publications. From 2015 to 2018, Dr. Vakilian practiced radiation oncology at Imperial Valley Cancer Center in El Centro, California, also serving as voluntary assistant clinical professor within the Department of Radiation Medicine and Applied Science at UCSD. From 2018 to 2021, he practiced at the Yuma Oncology Center in Yuma, Arizona using modern helical Tomotherapy.
A Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians (Canada), the doctor is a Diplomate of the American Board of Radiology (ABR).
