Get to know Family Physician and Addiction Medicine Specialist Dr. William M. Scott III, who serves patients in Piedmont, South Carolina.

Dr. Scott III, a highly esteemed family physician and addiction medicine specialist, is the owner of Dr. Scott’s Personalized Healthcare in Piedmont, South Carolina.

Personalized Healthcare was founded in 2009 as an answer to the ever-changing healthcare system which seemed to de-prioritize the patient experience in favor of profit. Dr. Scott III, after a distinguished medical career in multiple traditional medical and hospital settings, felt that it was time to return to a medical model with time spent on quality visits, meaningful care, and quality outcomes.

Focused on preventive medicine and the holistic needs of the client, he created Personalized Healthcare to address the increasingly cold and distant model of primary care. The best way to do this, he felt, was to set up a concierge model in which, for a modest retainer, patient loads were kept low and direct access to the care provider was offered. Relationships became more important than regulations; outcomes became more important than reimbursement; and most importantly, ACCESS became more important than insurance status.

A native of the Upstate, Dr. Scott III was born and raised in Easley, South Carolina. After graduating from the Citadel in 1969, he served in the U.S. Air Force during the Vietnam Era and was honorably discharged in 1972.

Attending Clemson University, Dr. Scott III received his preparatory courses for medical school and went on to attend the Medical University of South Carolina where he graduated with his Medical Degree in 1977.

From 1977 until 1980, he completed his residency in family medicine with Prisma Health/University of South Carolina (Greenville).

To underscore his commitment to ongoing education, Dr. Scott III holds board certification in family medicine from the American Board of Family Medicine (ABFM). The ABFM is a non-profit, independent medical association of American physicians who practice family medicine and its sub-specialties.

Recognized as a Fellow of the American Society of Addiction Medicine, Dr. Scott III is also board certified in addiction medicine by the American Board of Addiction Medicine, and received certification in functional medicine and age management through Cenegenics in 2012.

Family medicine is a medical specialty devoted to comprehensive health care for people of all ages. The specialist is called a family physician or family doctor. A family physician is often the first person a patient sees when seeking healthcare services. They examine and treat patients with a wide range of conditions and refer those with serious ailments to a specialist or appropriate facility.

Addiction medicine is a medical subspecialty that deals with the diagnosis, prevention, evaluation, treatment, and recovery of persons with addiction, of those with substance-related and addictive disorders, and of people who show unhealthy use of substances including alcohol, nicotine, prescription medicine and other illicit and licit drugs. An addiction medicine specialist provides prevention, evaluation, diagnosis, and treatment services for patients with unhealthy substance use or substance-related health conditions.

Being among the pioneer physicians in South Carolina to prescribe buprenorphine for addiction, Dr. Scott III takes pride in his expertise in guiding individuals through the process of discontinuing the medication. He is dedicated to seeing his patients through the entire course of treatment. A personal achievement of immense significance to him is his journey of sustained recovery for over two decades.
