  • Can I give my 2 year old mucinex?

HI, thank you for your question. Mucinex is an over-the-counter medication and comes in different forms. In general, most of the cough cold medications are not recommended for children under 6 years of age. Please always check with your pediatrician regarding medications. READ MORE

Thank you for your question. A dry cough may be caused by a few reasons: a virus, allergies that may be associated by a post nasal drip or runny nose. • Can an eye infection cause headaches?

Hi, thank you for your question. Eye infections like conjunctivitis or "pink eye" can cause eye irritation, burning or discomfort, but they really should cause significant headaches. If the eye infection involves redness and swelling around the eye and headaches then you may need to see your doctor sooner rather than later. READ MORE

  • Can a child with staph infection go to daycare?

Hi! Thanks for the question. I guess my answer would be - it depends on what kind of a staph infection your child has. If it is an infection that causes a fever, then I would recommend keeping your child home until the fever goes away for 24 hours without the need for fever reducers. If it doesn't involve a fever, but involves the use of antibiotics, you can probably be able to send your child to daycare after at least a day or 2 of completed antibiotics. Please always check back with your pediatrician and complete the prescription as ordered. Thank you. READ MORE

  • How do I know if my child has pneumonia?

Hi! Thank you for your question. Having pneumonia may only be one of the reason your child has a cough. Other things to consider would be: 1. A post nasal drip Dr allergies; 2. Reactive airway or asthma; or 3. Pneumonia, which can be viral or caused by bacteria. This can be diagnosed with a chest X-ray. Hope this helps. READ MORE

  • Can a viral fever last 7 days?

Thank you for your question. There are viral infections that can cause a prolonged fever. I usually advise patients though, if the fever lasts more than 3 days, especially if high grade >103 and if your child looks ill, then further tests may be required to check for blood borne infection. Hope this helps. Stay safe. READ MORE

  • How long does a fever and the flu last?

Hi, thank you for your question. Usually, fevers due to a viral infection (like the flu) can last anywhere from one days to about 5 days. If your child looks otherwise well and is up to date with immunizations they should do well. It is important to keep them drinking and hydrated in addition to the fever reducer that you choose to make them feel better. If there is any other concern like vomiting, diarrhea or severe cough or is not improving by the third day it is best that they see their doctor. Hope this helps and your child feel better soon. • When should I take my child to the doctor for an ear infection?

Thank you go the question. Some children may have ear pain, but not necessarily an ear infection. Ear infections can be a middle ear infection that may need antibiotics or an external ear infection like "swimmers ear." When to take your child to the doctor: if there is a fever, discharge from the ear, or severe pain. To help with pain, acetaminophen or ibuprofen may be used. READ MORE

  • What should I do if my child has conjunctivitis?

Hi! Thank you for your question. Conjunctivitis can be allergic, bacterial or viral. If her eyes are extremely itchy with clear discharge, then it can be allergic. Taking over-the-counter antihistamines like cetirizine (Zyrtec) or diphenhydramine (Benadryl) may help. If her eyes are red and the discharge is green or yellow, then she may need antibiotic eye drops. Viral conjunctivitis can also present with really red eyes, but not much discharge. If there are other symptoms other than red eyes like a fever, I suggest that she see her doctor. Hope this helps. READ MORE

Vision screening which may be what you mean by eye test usually between the ages of 3 and 3 1/2 yrs. So expect your child to be screened soon. READ MORE

  • What is the best home remedy for an ear infection?

Thank you for the question. If your child is around school age, is otherwise well-meaning no fever or severe pain from the ear or throat or discharge from the ear, some studies have suggested watchful waiting with pain control using acetaminophen or ibuprofen. If your child is younger or has a high fever or in a lot of pain then they need to be evaluated. The antibiotic choice will depend on known allergies' recent antibiotic use as well. I hope this helps. READ MORE

  • How can I stop my child from coughing?

Hi! Thank you for your question. There really is no medication safe out there that can stop a cough in its tracks. There are a lot of over-the-counter medications that are not controlled - most of them have combination medications like antihistamines (for allergies) and maybe a cough suppressant. Sometimes a cough may just be due to a runny nose or a post-nasal drip. There are prescription medications that you may need to talk to your doctor about, but for your child's age, they may not be safe. Thank you. Hope this helps. READ MORE
