Dr. Schmidt is an accomplished, board-certified neurosurgeon with specialized expertise in spine surgery and neuro-oncology. His main clinical focus is on management of patients with tumors and injuries to the brain, spine, and spinal cord. In addition, because of his expertise in minimally invasive and endoscopic surgical techniques, he sees complex patients with degenerative spine disease such as thoracic disc herniation and patients requiring microsurgery for spinal cord decompression in the neck and back.

Currently, he serves as the Director of the Department of Neurosurgery at Westchester Medical Center in Valhalla, New York. In this role, he oversees all neurosurgical services, including all brain and spinal surgical services, at WMCHealth’s Valhalla and Poughkeepsie campuses. His mission is to work collaboratively with his team to provide the highest quality care to the region’s neurosurgery patients, calling his patients’ quality of care his “first, second, and third” priority.

Westchester Medical Center is the premier provider of advanced medical care in New York’s Hudson Valley region. The flagship of the Westchester Medical Center Health Network, the 895-bed academic hospital located in Valhalla, provides local residents with acute care services, Level I trauma and burn care, organ transplants, advanced neurovascular procedures, and more, found nowhere else in the region.

Alongside his clinical role, Dr. Schmidt serves as a Professor and Chairman of Neurosurgery at New York Medical College in Valhalla, New York. Due to his expertise and publication record, he is also a sought after Visiting Professor at many prestigious national and international academic institutions.

Born in Bad Saulgau in southern Germany, Dr. Schmidt did his undergraduate studies at the University of Utah. He completed medical school and a residency in neurosurgery at the Medical College of Wisconsin in Milwaukee. He then went on to complete fellowships in neuro-oncology and spine surgery at the University of California, San Francisco. Most recently, he earned his Master of Business Administration degree from the David Eccles School of Business of the University of Utah.

A Fellow of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, the doctor is board-certified in neurological surgery by the American Board of Neurological Surgery (ABNS). The primary purposes of the ABNS are to conduct examinations of candidates who voluntarily seek certification and to issue certificates to those who meet the requirements of the board and satisfactorily complete its examinations.

To further his professional development, Dr. Schmidt’s research interests include investigating the benefits of minimally invasive spinal surgery for metastatic tumors, and the development of health outcome and quality of care measures. He is internationally known for his role in establishing a new thoracoscopic spine surgery technique for tumors and fractures. His research and clinical work have resulted in over 170 peer reviewed manuscripts, chapters, and books.

Neurosurgery is the medical specialty concerned with the prevention, diagnosis, surgical treatment, and rehabilitation of disorders which affect any portion of the nervous system including the brain, spinal cord, peripheral nerves, and extra-cranial cerebrovascular system. Neurosurgeons are doctors who diagnose and treat problems with the nervous system, often by performing surgery on the brain or spine. They treat strokes, tumors, cervical and lumbar disc disease, infections, and head or spinal cord injuries.
