A Flint native, he graduated from Carman High School in 1974. Years later, he earned his undergraduate degree from the University of Michigan Flint and his Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree from Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine in Missouri. Upon graduation, he went on to complete his residency in orthopedics at Doctor’s Hospital in Massillon, Ohio. 

Building on that experience, he became board-certified in orthopedic surgery by the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery, which is an organization with the goal of establishing educational and professional standards for orthopedic residents and surgeons, as well as evaluating the qualifications and competence of orthopedic surgeons. 

Orthopedic surgery is the branch of surgery concerned with conditions involving the musculoskeletal system. Orthopedic surgeons use both surgical and nonsurgical means to treat musculoskeletal trauma, spine diseases, sports injuries, degenerative diseases, infections, tumors, and congenital disorders. They work in clinical and hospital settings.
