About

Dr. Charles Elboim is a retired breast cancer surgeon, trained at a Harvard Medical School surgical program and formerly on the academic medical staff there, surgical director of the HCHP Cambridge, MA center, prior medical director of 3 breast cancer centers in Northern California and surveyor for the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers. He advanced the use of minimally invasive breast biopsy techniques at a time when other surgeons routinely took their patients to the O.R. for diagnostic surgical biopsies without knowing if the patienet even had breast cancer. He was the first surgeon in northern California to perform sentinel lymph node biopsies instead of full armpit lymph node operations, working closely with radiologists and pathologists in the development of this program. He considered it his responsibility to give patients the best cosmetic results possible from breast surgery, employing oncoplastic technoques for lumpectomies and mastectomies. He worked closely with plastic reconstructive surgeons to those ends. He championed breast cancer risk assessment, cancer genetic consultations and testing, involving non-profit philanthropic institutions and clinical resources. His relationship with patients was always that of respect, listening to people's concerns and needs, education at their level of understanding at every opportunity, collaborative decision making, appropriate referrals, as well as thorough planning and follow-up for each patient.
