  • Medication after a stemi and stent placement?

The fact that thankfully there was no damage to the myocardium (preserved EF after RCA stenting) does not change the fact that you are affected by coronary artery atherosclerosis. Beta blockers and aspirin are a required medication to reduce the risk of future adverse cardiac events. Hypertension is one of the main risk factor for occurrence and progression of coronary atherosclerosis, therefore it has to be well controlled, along with the other major risk factors, such as hypercholesterolemia, smoking, obesity, etc. For this reason, the use of lisinopril is indicated. The objective is to obtain adequate control of BP by the afterload reduction effect that you are mentioning. I hope this helps. Please, notice that moderate physical activity is an important factor to also prevent the occurrence of adverse cardiac events. READ MORE

  • Does open heart surgery affect your immune system?

Open heart surgery is a major stress for the body. So, like any other major surgical operation, definitely impacts on the immune system. Furthermore, the use of the heart lung machine (pump) caused a systemic inflammatory response that may cause further changes to the immune system response, so immunocompromised patients can be negatively affected by the consequences of a cardiac surgery operation having a potential higher risk of infection and delayed healing. On the other hand, cardiac surgeons routinely safely perform cardiac surgery operations in immunocompromised patients with astonishing outcomes. READ MORE

  • Can you reverse plaque buildup in your arteries?

Yes! The process of formation of atheromatous plaque can be impacted positively by control of blood cholesterol levels, control of hypertension and diabetes, healthy diet and control of obesity, moderate physical activity and absolute abstinence from smoking. Although, constitutional factors (genetics) impact significantly of the occurrence of atherosclerosis, environmental factors (in other words, what we do to ourselves) is as important in the progression of the disease.
