Get to know Geriatric Psychiatrist Dr. Solomon Williams, who serves patients throughout the State of Texas.

A trusted geriatric psychiatrist, Dr. Williams is the Deputy Chief of Staff at VA Central Texas Healthcare, a position he has held since February 2019. As such, he is primarily responsible for overseeing the medical care provided at the Austin Outpatient Clinic (OPC). In addition, he has executive oversight of various departments and services, including Mental Health & Behavioral Medicine, Dental, Compensation and Pension, Environmental Health, Imaging, Pathology & Laboratory Medicine, and Anesthesia Services.

Throughout his academic career, he earned his medical degree from the University of Benin Faculty of Medicine in Nigeria in 1988, and began working as a primary care and occupational medicine physician for a multinational petroleum prospecting firm. After gaining valuable experience in this role, he pursued further specialization by completing his residency in psychiatry at the St. Elizabeth’s/Department of Health Services program in Washington, D.C. He also completed a fellowship in geriatric psychiatry at the prestigious Yale School of Medicine.

Passionate about his profession, the doctor is board-certified in psychiatry by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology (ABPN). The ABPN is a not-for-profit corporation dedicated to serving the professions of psychiatry and neurology.

With his extensive background in psychiatry, Dr. Williams joined the CTVHCS (Central Texas Veterans Health Care System) as a staff general adult and geriatric psychiatrist in July 2004. Recognizing his dedication and aptitude for improving healthcare systems, he became actively involved in systems redesign processes aimed at enhancing the quality of care provided by the CTVHCS.

His passion for organizational change and his ability to drive improvements led to progressive leadership roles within the healthcare system. He served as the Chief of Outpatient Mental Health programs and later assumed the position of Acting Chief of Psychiatry. In 2010, he was appointed as the Associate Chief of Staff for Mental Health & Behavioral Medicine, further exemplifying his commitment to enhancing mental healthcare services.

To complement his practical experience, Dr. Williams has actively sought out opportunities for professional development. He has completed multiple leadership trainings, including the Health Leadership Development Program (HCLDP). Moreover, he is a distinguished graduate of the Harvard-Kennedy Senior Executive Fellows Program.
