Throughout his illustrious career, he was an attending physician at Flower and Fifth Hospital, Jewish Memorial Hospital, Cabrini Medical Center, NYU, and Columbia in New York. He served as Director of the Community Urology Project of Columbia in 1997.

While in the military, Dr. Contreras became a Major, then became a Colonel. He served as Chief of Urology Services at Fort Jackson in 1971. He also served as Chief of Urology Services at Fifty General Hospital, Stuttgart, West Germany, and at Walson Army Hospital in New Jersey. While serving, he was awarded the Bronze Star, the Vietnam Service Medal, and the National Defense Service Medal, and the Armed Forces Medal.

Regarding his educational background, Dr. Contreras earned his medical degree from the University of Santo Domingo in the Dominican Republic. After relocating to the United States, he went on to complete his internship at Presbyterian Community Hospital, his residency in general surgery at the VA Medical Center, and multiple residencies in urology at the University of Puerto Rico. He was also trained in the Medical Department Officer course in the US Army.

Licensed to practice medicine in New York, the doctor is board-certified in urology by the American Board of Urology (ABU). The mission of the ABU is to act for the benefit of the public by establishing and maintaining standards of certification for urologists, and working with certified urologists to achieve lifelong learning to ensure the delivery of high quality, safe, and ethical urologic care.

Among his professional affiliations, Dr. Contreras is a member of the Federal Government Service Urologists of Puerto Rico, the American College of Surgeons, the Dominican Medical Society, and the New York Academy of Medicine.
