  • How can acupuncture help my lower back pain?

Thank you for your question! Acupuncture is primarily used to treat pain in the United States and insurance companies cover the therapy for this specific symptom. We see many patients that have low back and all sorts of pain. As we don't know the underlying cause of your pain, it is difficult to provide an accurate assessment however I would like to share with you, surgery has only 50% chance of success or less and acupuncture has a 90% chance of success overall. You were mentioning that you had a 3 months old baby so if you are breastfeeding, it is not recommended to take any pain medication. Acupuncture is the most conservative approach without any side effects. Alexandre Hillairet, DAOM. READ MORE

  • Does acupuncture require other medicines to be effective?

Acupuncturists cannot tell you what type of medication you should take or not take. It is not part of our scope of practice. However, we may suggest that you talk with your primary physician if you have any concerns. Acupuncture is a safe procedure and it can be used with any medications. There is no interaction because we are not injecting any chemicals and there are no side effects. We see a lot of pain management cases: Patients usually are prescribed many medications before seeking acupuncture. One of the benefits of acupuncture is to reduce pain medication dosages, with the informed consent of the patient's physician. It is our goal to help the patient to completely stop their prescribed medication and this is a sign of healing. Alexandre Hillairet, DAOM. READ MORE

  • Does having acupuncture hurt?

It happens that a needle or two might hurt due to skin sensitivity or patient's physical state. I am confident to say that acupuncture doesn't hurt at about 95% of the time at our clinic. I have heard reports from my patients that previous practitioners who practiced, Chinese acupuncture and trained in China originally offer a more intense and painful therapy. Most practitioners trained in the US are using a guiding tube to insert the needles which was created and developed in Japan. Such a tool offers an overall painless experience. It is also important to note that some practitioners don't have good skills therefore it is important to find a qualified and skilled provider. Alexandre Hillairet, DAOM. READ MORE

  • Is acupuncture a complementary treatment or does it treat ailments by itself?

It is a very interesting question and we should categorize the answer. A patient who is being treated for cancer will experience some side effects from chemotherapy and radiation. Acupuncture is a complement to the therapy and it reduces the side effects such as nausea or skin sensitivity. A patient who is being treated for pain might be taking some prescribed medications: Acupuncture will help the patient reduce the dosage or completely stop the prescription under the supervision of the ordering physician. Then, this patient might only use acupuncture to maintain his or her body condition. Patients who are usually familiar with acupuncture will choose this modality to treat most of their ailments, however, acupuncturists are limited by their scope of practice and they will have to refer out if the condition requires an emergency medical intervention.
