Get to know Internist and Hospitalist Dr. Shawkat Ahmed, who serves patients in Shelby Township, Michigan.

Dr. Ahmed is a leading internist and hospitalist practicing at Great Lakes Medicine, PLC in Shelby Township, Michigan. He can also be found on staff at Henry Ford Macomb Hospital – Clinton Township, and is affiliated with both McLaren Health Care and Beaumont Health. 

Apart from being a doctor to his patients, Dr. Ahmed also enjoys getting to know them on a personal level. He wants them to feel comfortable with him so they can openly discuss their concerns. He believes connecting with patients is absolutely crucial to their healing process, apart from giving them medications. He uses this approach with each individual patient so that he or she can have the best patient experience. 

Back in the early days of his academic career, Dr. Ahmed received his Doctor of Osteopathy Degree from Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine in Erie, Pennsylvania in 2011. He then conducted his internal medicine residency at Ascension Macomb-Oakland Hospital, Warren Campus from 2011-2014. 

Board certified in internal medicine, Dr. Ahmed is a Diplomate of the American Osteopathic Board of Internal Medicine (AOBIM). The AOBIM is an organization that provides board certification to qualified Doctors of Osteopathic Medicine (DOs) who specialize in the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of disease in adults (internists). The Board is one of 18 medical specialty certifying boards of the American Osteopathic Association Bureau of Osteopathic Specialists approved by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA), and was established in 1942.

Distinguished with fellowship status, Dr. Ahmed is a Fellow of the American College of Physicians (FACP).

Internal medicine, also known as general internal medicine in Commonwealth nations, is a medical specialty for medical doctors focused on the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of internal diseases. Medical practitioners of internal medicine are referred to as internists, or physicians in Commonwealth nations.

Hospital medicine is a medical specialty that exists in some countries as a branch of internal or family medicine, dealing with the care of acutely ill hospitalized patients. Physicians whose primary professional focus is caring for hospitalized patients only while they are in the hospital are called hospitalists.
