My mother is having a risky heart surgery done. What can we expect after the surgery?
Hello, Your question is nearly impossible to answer with details so I need to make some assumptions. The first is she is over 70 and the second is no surgeon would proceed with risky surgery unless faced with no alternative. The third is that her cardiac condition has been progressive, debilitating and resulting in severe physical deconditioning. So, the recovery from surgery involves ones body needing a lot of protein to recover and if intake is not adequate, it breaks itself down to get what it needs for repair. This plus the pre-existing physical state and age can lead to shocking debilitation even to the point one is too weak to get out of bed. Hello, Let me answer the easy question first. Drug allergies are definitely NOT all life threatening. Now the hard part. To start, there is a difference between a drug allergy and a drug side effect. A drug side effect is where a medication causes an issue that does NOT involve the immune system. Examples include aspirin causing an upset stomach or an antihistamine causing sleepiness. The signs on an allergy are nearly innumerable. The immune system has different but interconnected arms that defend us against: Bacterial infections, parasitic infections, cancer, toxins, viruses, fungal and tuberculous infections and more. If a drug activates one or more of these functions and causes the immune system to act in an aberrant way you have a drug allergy.The drug can be directly attacked itself such as serum sickness from a tetanus shot or cause an attack on the person itself such as a drug induced rash from an antibiotic. Each drug usually tend to cause specific allergy issues. By far and away the best source to help out would be your doctor of pharmacist. You see, if you read the info sheets on drugs it reads like a little shop of horrors. How can I calm my mother before her surgery?
Well, this is a 2-part question. If she is worrying about the covid 19 issue, most places are testing all patients prior to surgery, staff are rigorously screened, and meticulous clean down procedures are followed. I actually feel safer taking care of covid patients with the multiple layers of protection we have compared to the supermarket where people are shopping with no masks and are walking down the aisle coughing! Risk is very, very low. If it is some other issue, then the best treatment is her doctor/surgeon. Fear of the unknown can be the worst kind. With some dialogue, this both eases worry and builds trust in the operating staff. Nearly always when a patient had anxiety and I sat down and went over everything, it helped a good bit. It's important to be honest and not sugar coat things, as you will lose credibility and then the thought process mentally will go along "that it is so bad that they won't tell me the truth."
